Thumbs up Aftermarket Distributor

Hey folks, a few weeks after my intake / exhaust / carb upgrade on my 300, things are running great! I do have on residual problem, though. My stock type distributor seems to be having problems. My copy of the original Ford shop manual says that the centrifugal advance should not engage until 2500 RPM, as well as the vacuum advance at 2500. When I checked it with a timing light, the timing was advancing at about 1500. Since the vacuum diaphragm has no adjustment on this carb, and I dunno squat about changing the springs for the centrifugal advance, I want to replace it.

Who has experience with a distributor upgrade, and what would you recommend? Also, who makes an aftermarket distributor for the 300 six? I checked MSD's website, and couldn't find one for this motor.

you probably need to get the advance spring kit for your distributor. i really do not know much about advance but does it matter when it advances. and as for aftermarket stuff, stay away from them because they don't help and they are not as reliable

get a mallory uni-lite and be done with all the distro problems. I have a '95 and dropped in a uni-lite over 80,000 miles ago - problem free. This distro has no moving parts that contact eachother and the optical pickup is flawless.

you have an efi motor so that is why there is no moving parts. yours won't work for a carbed setup

The Unilite will work, but I'd get the vacuum advance version if available. I used a mechanical advance one in a SBChevy several years ago, and while that was a mistake for the street, I found it to be a very good quality distributor. For the Chebbies, you can get a conversion kit for a stock dizzy, dunno if they have that for a Ford Six.

well i still think he should just get a spring kit or fix whatever is wrong with the stock one and be done, or he could also add an msd box because a distributor will only make it look good.

Yeah, even with a conversion kit(if they even make one) he's still got the spring problem on the stock dizzy. Not a real big deal to rebuild and replace. Just get new springs(shouldn't be that expensive, even direct from the Ford dealer). Clean up and lubricate the weights and advance mechanism, replace the vacuum advance, and you've got a practically new dizzy on the cheap. Just have to spend a little time.

efi has nothing to do with it, the uni lite is self contained, you can adjust advance with a "key" that is included with the unit.

Ok, here's the skinny on the uni-lite, you need no igintion box as it is built into the distributor. all you need is a coil and hook up the wires, theres only 3 wires for turn on lead and what not. just drop it in, hook it up and connect a coil. all that is left is to set the advance curve with the "key" that is included. you just stick it into the appropriate slot and push it in until the desired step on the key is reached. each step on the "key" is like 3 degress or something (can't remember). very easy and pretty much maintenance free.
