Fan clutch

I was told by my local shop buddy that my fan clutch is going, but as of right now I have no problem whatsoever with cooling, he said that since the fan clutch is mounted on the water pump I wont be able to convert it to a electric fan? I've seen other F-150's with electric fans though! In fact I've heard quite a few just walking through parking lots, they were running while truck was off (thermo switch controlled obviously)
I would like to free back some of the power the belt mounted fan is taking away but not risk overheating, Now it's never gone over the "n" in normal but...no need to let it get hotter than that! I've looked in summit racings catelogs and big fans, 14" ~1400 CFM dont run much more than $110, and I was qouted $120 by the shop for a new fan clutch, which way do you guys recommend I go?

If you chose to take of your stock fan and fan clutch, you need something that moves at least 2400 c.f.m.. Go to flex-a-lite and get the electrical fan called the "black-magic." I believe summitt racing carries them and the installation can be done in a couple of hours. I took off my fan and fan clutch and I can really feel the difference in the engine "working". I also haven't had any over heating problems since putting on and running exclusively with an electrical fan.

What led him to tell you the fan clutch is failing ? This time of yr the fan clutch would likely never engage . The major problem with fan clutches is them not engaging when they should ..IE: During hot weather , stop & go traffic & Running the A/C .

I've also had them fail where they stay locked all the time.
It sounds like the motor is going to blow up, but it's the
noise the fan makes at high rpm. Usually when you first start
the truck in the morning, the fan will be locked in but after
a minute or so it will release.

Electrics are great. You want to get the largest cfm electric with the lowest amp draw. I'm not sure what some of the other fans are drawing these days, but the best I have found is the 14" or 16" Perma-Cools. They draw about 9 amps and provide 2500-2900 cfm. I've considered putting two 14" perma-cools in front of mine. Right now (cause I didn't know any better), I'm running dual 12" flex-lites that put out about 2200 cfm, but the amperage draw is something like 18 amps. Get a thermal switch that mounts into a water passage port on your engine, a relay switch that will turn the fans on when your A/C compressor kicks in, and a manual override that allows you to toggle the switch on when you want.

You guy ought to here one of those clutch fans when it is attached to a 6.9 diesel and is locked tight!!! it sounds like a turbo fan jet!!!!! I had one lock up on my 86 6.9 and the mileage went in the toilet as did the performance I never thought of replacing it with electric until I felt the difference with the new one on there. Mine didn't go all at once because the truck never had as much power as it does now(last 2 years) since I bought it. John

I have a 93 F-150 with a 4.9L.My fan clutch had started to leak some of the fluid out, just enough to keep it engauged.I replaced mine with the Flex-a-lite Black Max fan.Of all the performance stuff I have installed {K&N air filter,MSD 6A,Accel super coil and plug wires,Flowmaster cat back system}the fan made the most noticeable difference.

I'm thinking of going with:
PRM-19115 16 in., 2,100-2,950 cfm electric fan 9 amp draw

Or should I go with the 14" fan? Only a $5 price difference but I'd think the 16" would be better...any known issues with fit? I would also be ordering the a/c switch, manual switch, and temp controlled switch...at 170` if I recall right.

Measure the surface of your radiator from top to bottom. I believe it is something like 18" so the 16" will work. The only way I would go with the 14" is if I put two of them side by side.

yah good point...how should I go about mounting it? My brother put one on his mustang and when backing out of the garage he drove right over it...the thing didn't hold on when it was turned on and the motor was vibrating the thing...I really dont want to drive over a $90 fan!

The ones that I have installed just used nylon ties that run through the radiator. They come as an installation kit for about 5-6 bucks. If you want to get a more solid mount, Perma-Cool sells a metal strapping kit also, and then one of the catalogs has a neat looking $60 kit that uses metal braces that wrap over the top of your radiator. But....I've had mine in on my truck for over 2 years with no porblems (nylon ties) and we run one on our race car with no problems and my son just installed one on his high hp, V8, s10.
