checking wires

Help, I don't know #### about trucks. My problem is I want to check to see if my gas gauge works or is the problem in the sending unit. I took off the plug to the unit, now to check the gauge do I put a meter across the white and yellow wire ( these are going to the gauge) or ground out one of those wires? If the needle moves then the problem is in the unit, correct? Thanks for helping out a non-mechanic.

Its been a while...but if i remember you `ground` the `power wire` going to the gauge.. Simulates a full tank. The gauge should go to full.
