My '91 4.9L F-150 has the upper radiator hose running on top of the radiator, from T-stat elbow outlet centered in engine's width, clear over to the radiator inlet at driver's side of radiator; plenty of opportunity for chafing and fan cuts if not formed exactly right!
Previously, I've always wrapped that hose with a jacket made out of the old hose, and trimmed or tie-wrapped for cleanance.
No longer--O'Reilly AP has a Gates-brand hose, (their higher-cost one, of course) which is formed properly and has a chafe-resistant jacket made of the same plastic sleeving used to loom wiring harnesses together.
