It appears that I may have been correct, at least on mine. As I stated I had a similar problem, and was fairly certain that it wasn't the brakes. I had recently rotated my tires from the back to the front, on the same side, and that's when the problem appeared to begin, so I decided to switch the front tires to see what happens, and that seemed to fix it. I have 36" Interco TrXus tires, so they aren't uni-directional, so it should cause any problems to do this. If this hadn't solved my problem, I would have turned the rotors.
I doubt that my rotors are warped. I have really babied my brakes since I bought the truck new in 2002. Warped rotors can occur when you really stand on your brakes, and I have never had to do that.
I took my SD to my local tire shop after I had put a couple of thousand miles on my new 35 x 12.5 BFG All-Terrain Radials. I asked them to balance and rotate them. The pulsing effect all but disappeared after that.
It has now reappeared after 6,000 miles. I guess I will just have to pay the piper and have them rotated and balanced more often. When I take my truck in for another rotation/balance episode, I will ask them to use a torque wrench on the lug nuts.
I've had the same problem on 2 trucks.. First on a 1998 Super Duty gas job, and again on a 2002 Super Duty diesel. The problem occured after storing the trucks for the winter. Seems that road salt residue created rust spots on the rotors under the calipers and brake pads. The hard surface of the rusted areas made the pulsation in the steering wheel when the brakes were applied.
My dealer replaced all 4 rotors under warranty both times.
