I guess I made a mistake. I just bought some new tires for my 1997 F-150 4x4 from costco, and they told me the tires I chose wouldn't fit my wheels AFTER I bought the them. Well the tires on on their way from the BFG plant, so I'm in a hurry to find wheels they will fit on before they get here. I got 285/75-16R BFGoodrich M/T's, and I have 16x7" wheels. They guy told me that I need at least 7.5" wide wheels or the tires will not fit safely. I've been looking around and having trouble finding 16" Ford wheels at least 7.5" wide. I want the wheels that have the 5 fat spokes, but every one I have found is 7 inches wide. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could find a set of wheels, preferably the 5-spoked ones, and not spend more than $300 for it all? I've checked almost every junk yard around here today, and noone has any. Somebody please help. Also, If anyone lives near Huntsville, AL, I'll pay $100 to trade my wheels for yours if you have at least 7.5" wide wheels. The ones I have on my truck have 6 spokes and look excellent, barely any scratches at all. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions at all
I work at a tire shop, and I have seen alot fatter tires go on alot skinnier rims. I have also seen very skinny tires go on very wide rims. Through everything I have seen, i would not be worried about getting a rim that is a half an inch wider, I really cant see the big difference, and so far I have heard any of our customers complain about any of that kind of problem!
So putting them on a 7 inch wheel wouldn't really matter? By the way what is the OEM backspacing on my truck and what size lugs do I need? I'm not too fond of the way my wheels look so I might just go ahead and buy some aftermarket ones.
I called Costco and they told me that because of liability, they must put the tires on the size wheels that are recommended, so I am going to need to know what the backspacing is for 16x7 wheels so I can match it to the backspacing on the 16x8 wheels I'm going to have to get. I don't want too little backspacing on the new wheels because I don't want my tires sticking out past the fenders, I'm picky when it comes to how my truck looks (Isn't everyone??). Does anyone know what wheel manufacturers are good with keeping the wheels snug and not stick out? I need help people come on here, this is life or death to me!!!!
If I was you man, I would take and buy the tires, and get them put on from a real shop, and not costco. A real tire shop will be able to help you out much more then any costco ever could!
I agree, take them to a real shop and they would be able to help you out a little more. I put 33" x 12.5s on a 6.5" rim before... They looked really goofy but it held just fine. As far as getting wheels, you don't want to much more backspacing than stock because you will start rubbing on the truck. For some decent rims look at e-bay and tires.com
I am not exactly sure what the backspacing is. It doesn't seem like .5 an " rim would make a big differnce but really I have no idea and have never tried it so if they say it's not safe it might not be safe so I would do it at your own risk. I like differnt backspacing than stock wheels as I like them sticking out the side but like he said they rub unless you lift the truck.
