We have windows, just not near me, they are tinted. With the dirt on them a bright sunny day looks grey and overcast. A grey overcast day it looks like its night.

I am probably the guy that bugs the rest of the office. I work outside in the summer so I am only in my cube in the winter months, when I am not a meetings or training. Whenever I am at my cube, I am usually on the phone or somebody is at my cube asking me questions. Glad I don't have to deal with me.

That is just one instance. I back up the tech support line, in the past 2 days i've had 30 customers ask me "What is that?" . The "Honking" the tip of the ice berg. Belching, Flatulance and LOUD cussing are just some of the other problems. I've Been to the boss, his boss and His boss. Same corporate run around. It's just not professional

Back in 85, I worked for a large defense contractor in what they called the "bullpen". It was a room that was at least 100 x 200 feet, and we had all of our grey desks in rows. Talk about no privacy, it was like being married. Somebody would fart and 50 to 60 people would hear/smell it. You also felt like you were under a microscope. It was funny when almost all of us would wear white shirts in the summer. Had a hard time telling who was who from a distance.

The movie Office Space, even though an exaggerated comedy, is very much accurate for those who live the cubicle life. My first job out of college I worked in a cubicle in the basement of a building from 4-midnight. Not only did it stink from not having windows, I also got the joy of seeing everyone leave for the day at 5 while I still had 7 hours to go.

Now I have an office, two windows, an L-shaped desk, and a nice leather chair. But I WOULD go back if only I could have the low level of responsibility again! Posting messages on this forum is the only thing that keeps me sane sometimes.

Yeah I have to agree with you on that one. I am more or less a general manager when it comes down to it, even though the title says only sales manager. I use the forum just to kinda get away from the daily grind.

I sympathize- I held that "manager" title for decades. It's a lot of work (and stress from all sides). Thankfully, I don't manage anything anymore (except myself ). And yes, I have an office.

I've been stuck in a cubicle for 7 1/2 years now, of which I've moved 6 times, 2 times moving between up and down stairs, and 3 others of which I had to take my own filing cabinet (which has enough room for crackers, ibuprofen and extra change). I put my notice in last week because I'm moving back east (PA) in May. I'm curious to see what I end up with for work over there, hopefully not another cube farm though. It's funny to see everyone "prairie doggin' " when someone yells or something. You peak up and everyone else in the joint is doing the same thing. BTW- For any of you that have individuals with gas nearby, get a fan. I spent $4 at Target and have that thing crankin' on my desk. Best investment ever, I can't even smell my own funk when it hits!!! haa haa.

HA HA HA HA HAAAAA!!!! I LAUGH at the cubicle lifestyle!!!

I worked in the service sector for 13 years, wasting my life in cubicles and paternal management environments. I lived from one break to the next to get away from it!

That's all behind me now, as I finally came to my senses and have started a new life in the restoration/hot rod/kustom field!

How did I get so lucky. My office cubicle is the great outdoors. Lots of opportunities as a superintendent of a country club.

I actually find it hard to spend enough time in the office. The paper work gets deep at times.

I could not do that, I'm sorry - but it is beyond me!

I have to have my hands working, and be busy doing something that I can SEE when its all over...

Something I can point at and say:

"YEAH! I did that...."

It tends to define me.

It can be a wild car or truck, or a radar system I brought back from the dead, an amplifier for a stage band, or a satellite dish install, it doesn't matter.

I live in the world of actual works, and always will.

I am a craftsman by nature...

For those of you in cubes, don't feel too bad. Where I work, they are phasing in "pods" that are even smaller and staggered in such a way to fit more in (hard to explain over the web). They have less space and privacy than the cubes we have now with 4-5' walls have.

I am on the same floor as the IT help desk and some of them have 1/2 cubes or less. Hell, some are out in the traffic lane with a desk barely big enough to put a monitor on. I'm not even kidding a little. I doubt you can roll the average office chair up under the desktop.

Luckily, I will get a pod and not be one of these poor souls...er, I guess I'm lucky....
