My brother in law just bought a '99 (or thereabouts) Ford Contour 5 speed. Got a good deal, but he was wondering if it could be fitted with a cruise control.
I told him to ask his local Ford dealer, hoping it'll be a plug in add on. If there isn't, I was wondering if any of you have tried an aftermarket cruise control, and how it worked for you? What was the cost, and how difficult was it to install?
I installed one on a Ford Fairmont in 1982. Not much trouble to install then but technology has probably changed since then. I had another one installed at a store where sutomotive sound equipment is sold. That one worked fairly well but both of them were less sensitive than original equipment and did not operate as smoothly when going up and down grades. They had a tendency to overcompensate rather than to very gradually increase and decrease speed. But, they were definitely better than not having one on a long trip.
Polarbear that sounds like techs that didn't follow the isntructions. When my dad bought his '04 E150 they (the dealer) put cruise on it for him. Took an hour.

Funny- it was on a couple of E150's w/4.6's. Factory "plug in" module didn't- 'bout $500 later, it was good to go.
