While checking my automatic transmission level this weekend I spent a lot of time near my idling engine. I noticed the Air Conditioner Compressor would kick on, and after a while cycle off. I jumped in the cab thinking I'd mistakenly switched the A/C on....its cold up here in the Northwest! Anyway, the heat was full on.
Any ideas folks? This isn't normal is it? Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

yes, AC runs in all modes except the mode at ll o'clock position.

I have always been under the impression that the AC compressor would only engage its clutch when air conditioning was selected. Do all auto AC systems operate this way?

No, some only work in ac and defrost mode. my super duty was the first for me to have AC work in all modes except the one at 11 o'clock position.

You didn't describe your truck. In my 02 250 PSD the AC does NOT run with the air directed only to the dash or only to the floor. It runs with the switch in all other positiions. From reading the owners manual I believe this is normal.
For future reference, you should develop a Signature which describes your vehicle and also any personal info you want to share.

I didn't even consult the owners manual on this one. I've been disappointed in the lack of detail it provides so I assumed it wouldn't answer this question. Thanks for all your information.
Every vehicle I've ever worked on only engages the A/C clutch when it's in A/C or defrost mode. Maybe some of the newer ones 2000+ engage in other positions but I can't figure out why they would. Most often, if your a/c is comming of and on (clutch quickly engaging then disengaging) it's do to a lack of refrigerant in the system. Or rarely a bad low pressure sensor. Put some guages on it and let us know what you find out.
it does it to keep the lubrication flowing through the system during the year also. its normal for it to cycle on and off. the only one it wont is in floor heat.
