I have noticed lately that my truck, when at idle (can not tell when driving) makes an akward sound, kinda of like a low hum. Lowly say haaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuugggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhn and that is what the sound is most similar to. It will sometimes go away when I turn the steering wheel, but not always. Any ideas? GO IRISH!
I'm not sure I got the sound just right... How lowly should one say it? Is it a low as in tenor? Or is it a low as in quietly? Oh, and by gggghhhhh... Do you mean the "F" sound as in enough? Or, do you mean more of a "G" sound as in good, followed up by a "H" sound as in help?
I know you're kinda sensitive to questions... I read the thread on NOX for your I6, but, you'll have to clarify the sound if you want any help.
Did you check the level in you power steering pump? Maybe the bearings in one of the accessories... alternater, water pump, steering pump, etc.
it is more like a quiet low honnnnnnnish type sound, it is hard to type out but it sounds like honk without the k at the end. I don't think that it is low powersteering fluid cause whenever i fill it up I always notice the next time i check fluid has escaped through the hole in the cap. I was really only checking to see if anyone had a similar prob and knew what it was and how to fix it. Thanx, and about the NOS I was just venting about people not really helping me but more of like questioning my reasoning but in a attacking type way instead of a suggestive way.
Ravin_, does the truck have a lot of miles on it since the last time the power steering fluid was changed? if so this could be a warning before something in the power steering pump goes bad and really makes noise. try changing the power steering fluid first.

fuel pump perhaps? mine makes the same noise (if i'm reading it right), and so does my brother's 1989 t-bird (although his is a lot louder). talking to everyone, it seems just to be a ford thing that they start making noise. i hear mine the most when i have the rear vent open. don't know if this'll help. just thought i'd give my 2 cents.

Is it kind of a buzzing noise at idle? Can you make it change by depressing the accelerator? Is it an AOD trans? If so, it is the transmission and Ford released a TSB years ago to correct it. I believe you have to replace the valve body gasket and possibly follow a procedure installing a service kit to prevent the fluid from oscillating in the throttle valve. My truck does it at times but I never bothered to fix it since it is only annoying and will do no harm.
