My '05 came with upgraded wheels, the spare was a matching upgraded wheel. I also got the McGuard key in the glove box to lower the spare, but a thief has a more complete set of 'keys' to the locks then I do so it would not take them much to drop the wheel. Add a cable / lock to your spare once you get one.
If I were you, I wouldn't even talk to the dealer any more. Look in the back of your owner's manual--there's usually a toll free customer service phone number there. Just call them and tell them that the dealer wants to charge you to supply something that's supposed to be there. The dealer will hear from them
add a real great big lock and chain. anything less and the thieves will get it unless you leave the spare at home.mine has hardened square links and a nice cover. cost like $60 but worth every penny if I get a flat.
I've read a couple threads like this and I have to wonder... my '04 came from the dealer with a cable and padlock holding the spare on. Is this not factory? It's not a very heavy cable, and I've considered changing it for a bigger chain. but at least something is there.
I got a call from the dealer today and was told that they've just ordered a new wheel/tire for me and will install it free of charge next week. I never got pushy or rude with them but was very clear how disappointed I was in the response. I talked briefly to the General Manager and he wasn't very happy with the way his staff had handled the situation.
A happy ending...
