Second day with the new 250SD CC 4X4 Lariat, 1)Is there a good sounding muffler out there I can add, I miss the rumble of my 5.4 triton flowmaster combo. 2)I was told 315 series tires, would tuck nicely under stock suspension. I actually just thought of one more Question, 3) Used to be firm practitioner of K&N air filters, but after reading here on the forums not putting one on my new workhorse. So I did find AFE filters, which used medical gauze in them, are those filters a bit safer to use than the K&N as far a finer debris making it into engine. Thanks for the responses in advance.
i to am thinking flow master but a 70 series since i'm not big on loud and my 95 hopped up 150 runs great and has a sound level i like. the stock a/f is the best all around and is cheap enough esp. if you pick up a few from walley world. i have had k&n's but don't like cleaning the t/b as i have had to do with them. good luck with your ride

K&N is a gauze filter also, the muffler on the V-10 is very sensitive to what type unit you use. While you'll never get that V-8 sound they can make a very satisfying growl. Do not buy a straight thru type, you'll hate it. Flowmasters seem to work pretty good, but you have to have deflector type. From there it's just a matter of picking the sound level inside and out. 70's are quiet, 40's are louder. There's plenty of sound clips around, listen and make your choice, good luck.
I have a FM Super 40 with duals out the sides. I left the stock exhaust pipe and just added one on the other side. I think it sounds every bit as nice as my 351 Bronco did. Nice rumble at start up and idle. Minimum interior sound, only negative noise I have is sustained 50mph drone, but I seldom stay at that speed anyway. Nothing negative on the open road. I wish I would have done it earlier. BTW, I have a V10 Excursion with 315s and a lift.
Good Luck
You can call me and I will let you hear it over the phone. Send me a PM.
If you want to hear what NOT to buy, I'll call you. I have a straight thru, Holley Afterburner, Jetburner, Aerotech-burner, or something. I don't like it. It sounds like a Civic with a fart-pipe, so uh,,,yea, don't do what I did, Ken
That is just as important. I wanted to hear what some thought was good while others thought that same thing was bad. I kept hearing that anything sounds bad, just keep it stock. Some liked the aero-turbine or something while others do not. I was torn between Magnaflow and FM and went with the FM since I had previous dealings with it. FM techs recommended the FM70 for SUVs. He said the Super 40 would just make the current exhaust noise louder which is what I wanted. Stock exhaust sounds good but quiet. I wanted it louder and to exit both sides.
I am very happy.

Could not agree more. As many of you know, I have the Banks Powerpack on my V10. The Banks Dynaflow muffler that cane with the kits was a straight through design and it sounding like crap. Very recer sounding. I lived with that for about a week until I ordered a FM70 instead. A HUGE improvement. It still are certain RPM's has a finky V6 tone to it. Usually at 1800-2200 RPM while accelerating. But other than that I like the way it sounds most of the time. I t way deeper that the tinny burbling of the stock set up.
I wish I could get you guys a sound clip of it......but no way to record it. You can call me up and I can let you listen over the phone.
As far as the K&N filter, there is a huge and usually heated debate over them. The Banks kit came with one and a new front half of the filter housing with a 30% larger intake opening. I nstalled it back in July and yesterday was the forst time I serviced it. There was no dust in the tube like other has experienced. My engine oil stay amber until at least 4000K miles. I change it at 5000K intervals. The new K&N recharge kit has a aerosol can instead of the squeeze oil bottle. This help alot in the dreaded over oiling cause MAF failure. As far as the HP and TQ gains are hard to nail down. All the the improvement is in the 2500+ rpm range. When you cross 3000 RPM....lookout you can really tell the headers are there.
