I am in the process of building a 51 F1.Its got a 289 engine & C4 Auotomatic transmision. I however do not have any shock mounts for the front shocks. What would be the best way to fix this? Should I find a set of original mounts and make it stock (are the shocks available).Or is it possible to mount air shocks up front? Everything else will pretty well be stock, but I would like to get the best steering possible from the stock straight axle. Also Is there any way to swap to a disc setup on the original axle? has any body done this from a donor vehicle? Thanks for any info.
I am sure there will be other questions in the not to distant future.
Like Ross (Alquq F-1) says, get the stock mounting brackets. The stock shocks are still available and most aftermarket shocks can be installed if you want. The shocks are very ordinary in the mounting method. ...Terry '52 F1
There is a pair of F1 front shock mounts on Ebay right now. I saw them last night. For the disc brake question check out www.Bonusbuilt.com look under brake upgrades. Also on the bonusbuilt home page, center section check out the part that says "how to flip an F1 and walk away from it"

Welcome to FTE! The other guys covered the shock mounts. Easy.
There are disc brake, power brake and power steering kits available for the straight axle. Also dropped axles/spindles are available. MidFifty, Sacramento Vintage, John's F-Fun Hundreds all carry these, to name a few.
Orange 51f1, your 289 and C4 is exactly the setup in my 51. I'm wondering what rear axle you have. Mine is original Dana, 4:11 I think. It is too lowgeared for easy freeway driving I find. I'm at about 2700 RPM at 55 mph, but could pull a house. Are you changing the rear end, or remaining stock?
MO51 it's either a 32 or a 4:27 rear gear ratio. My 51 has the HD non-syncro 4 speed with the optional 4:27 I agree its a real stump puller. Look at www.Bonusbuilt.com there is differential upgrades listed there. I would like to find a mid to late 60's rearend with 3:50 gears it's a direct bolt in. Also on the Bonusbuilt home page center section look at the pictures entitled "How To Flip An F1 And Walk Away From It".
Thanks for the info will pickup a set as soon as I find a set and have the dough. Kinda goin slow But its fun. As to the ratio I dont know. I know it is bone stock. Is this diff fairly strong? I was thinking of putting a nine inch under there, but if it will hold up I'll stick with it for a while. The engine I'm using is actually a 30. over 302 That I am dressing up to look like a 289. And the tranny is from a torino with a 351 cleveland. Will check out The bonus built page. Will mounts from 48-52 work or do I need to hunt 51 specifically? Thanks again
Yes, the Dana 44, I'm told, is prized by rodders for its brute force capabilities. There is a place in Rancho Cordova, CA that sells re-gearing for the Dana 44, I priced it one time, I think it is about $600, which is more than I needed to spend at the time. Then there's installation, and that's pretty touchy, what with gear lash, etc, so I passed on it.
MY 51 has a bomb proof dana 60 five lug with 3.73's a posie and 35 spline axles.the truck has a 302 and a five speed but i havent driven her yet hopefully in a few months.
As for the original question, try Classic Performance Products at www.classicperform .com they have alot of stuff for that straight axle at a decent price.
