With the way gas prices are today everyone is trying to do their best. I am curious as to how my MPG should rate on the highway with the following: 1988 F-150, 4.9 FI, AOD tranny, 3.55 gears, 235X15 tires. I hear alot of bull ---t about gas mileage but truthfully, what should one expect with this setup? Here's a good one, a guy down the street says he gets 28 on the highway with a Chebbie 4wd, 350, on the road. I think some of them there chebbies have been distorting his math a little bit!!
the only way to find out your gas milage is to actually drive it and use the trip meter to keep track of the miles you went on each tank, then you can calculate it.

WHen I had a straight six in my truck I never got over 14 mpg! No matter what I did, tailgate down, running it exactly as I should have, low shifting it to keep the rpms down. Nothing I did, even changing out the cat (because it was plugged), changing out numerous (almost all) of the sensors, and installing an MSD tfi coil, and a K&N air filter. Nothing helped. I swapped over to a V8 and now I get 14 as a starting mileage, and it will get 16 when newly tuned, but over the course of a year, it drops, so I know it's time for a tuneup!

Hotrod, One last thing. That Che#y would have to have the engine shut off. lol.
Mantta, Every 4.9 that I have seen averaged in the 14 to 16 MPH range. Brand new on the highway they did do a little better but that mileage did not last. 14-16 is the norm.

Yeah that's right, I forgot that part of it.
I think my brother has finally given up on his Chevy. It hasn't run in almost 6 months! And practically every time it does run for a little while, he ends up breaking something else on it! I love it, my truck can take a beating and keep on going, guess that's why Ford's are #1 huh?

My `87 S10 blazer with 2.8L V6 got 23 mpg, how in the world can a 350 get 28? My new truck (`97 GMC Sierra) gets 20-21 mpg depending on how many people I wamp on at red lights I still love my ford, but the GMC has cloth buckets and cup holders d@mmit, and even a cloth headliner (my f150 has no head liner, vinal bench and no cup holders)
Kevin, it wouldn't take much to put a headliner in your Ford. I can email you some pictures of mine. I put one in mine! It was a stripped down custom when I bought it, now it's almost an XLT-Lariat, except for power windows & locks, because I can't find the stinking wiring under the dash.
All you need is a truck with the same interior color as yours, grab the interior panels that go behind the seat (the ones with the speakers in them) and the get a headliner board out of the same truck. You'd be amazed at how much it will quieten the inside of the truck! It's definitely an improvement, trust me. Mine had a vinyl floor mat, and all black dash trim, and no frills! Not anymore though, I changed all that.

The closest truck with same color interior and XLT model with cloth bucket seats is 97 miles away from me, So far the seats haven't pissed me off enough to warrent the drive, but I'm sure that when the summer kicks in down here again I'll be making the drive and getting the seats, headliner, floorboard cover, lower door carpeting, and possibly the chrome headlight surrounds...the gray surrounds are the only thing that have been holding me back from getting a brushed aluminum billit grill with integrated fog lights and ford emblam cutout.
Hotrod_88, I have seen those chevies get a whloe lot more than 28mpg when they're being towed by a ford!!!! tell that guy to stop smoking crack it is bad for his health not to mention he cant even tell a beleivable lie!!!! John
Hey guys, thanks for your input. I guess all this mileage thing depends on alot of things like maintenance, the driver and all. I have had them all Fords, Chebbies, Dodges and Studebakers, all trucks. The one I got the best mileage with was a 71 with the 240 and 3 on the tree. I guess the Stude was next. The Ford's were the best all around and the ol Stude came in a very close second, they were ugly but, they were well built and had alot of good features.

i've got the same truck. (except mine's a 5-speed) lemme just say one thing. give up. if you're getting about 14-16, then you're about where that engine should be. just be happy that, although it gets ##### gas mileage, it'll get it for about 300,000 miles!
I got 17 mpg with my F250 4x4, ZF 5 speed, stock 16" tires, 300 I6. Then I put on a topper which barely is taller than the cab and full length running boards. Now the best I get is 15mpg and the worst is 12mpg and I normaly get 14.5mpg. A bug deflector on the hood cost me 1 mpg. If price of gas keeps going up the topper and running boards are going too.
I had a 1988 E-150 with a 4.9 and it got about 16 1/2 mpg in a 55 mph zone. The faster you go the more wind resistance and less mpg. The guy who said he was getting 28 mpg in his 4x4 truck had better keep it a secret or the government will seek him out!
