I bought a 2002 Ford Ranger XLT and the carfax they ran was free and clear -- These salewoman assured me that no cars in their lot have been in accidents... i brought it into a body shop yesterday for some wind noise I was expereincing and they told me it has been in an accident... and the body shop who repaired it did a crappy job...
Does anyone know if I have any recourse concerning this purchase?
Unless they stated in writing that it has never been in an accident, it became your ride when you signed papers. Was it in a real accident or just a dent in a fender? Just curious, if it was a crappy repair how was it not noticed before purchase?
the lines looked fine.. but then I had this terrible wind noise when heading down the highway with a head wind... so like I said I brought it in and they showed me that the front drivers side door had been repaired - hood replaced - drivers side panel etc...
it's the first used car I have ever bought - my other two I bought brand new - Just learned to NEVER take a saleman word for anything...
good news is that i bought the extended warranty... incase engine problems occur...
I was just a dumb about how I went about buying it...
I thought with CarFax if it came back free and clear, but really had been in an accident then they offered $5000 or something of the sort. Or is that only if the title is incorrect, as in they say it's a clear title but it turns out to be a salvage??
Yeah... I don't think thats true.. I think that the previous owner didn't have insurance and had the cheapest place make the repairs and then he sold it...
the interesting part is that the body shop was the same body shop that all that lots cars get detailed at... so my question to the GM was "don't you review all of your vehicles before you put them on the lot?"
the guy at the body shopt said "this truck has definately been in a wreck"
I traded in a 2002 Subaru Outback that was mint - thats why I am really pissed... mostly at myself... but i racked up 68,000 miles on the subaru and bought the Ranger with 32,000...
Kchamber,
I can say this with clarity. If this had happened to me, there would be serious heck to pay at this dealer. If you've tried the "nice approach" and they won't budge. Then I would tell them you have a plan to contact the Better Business Beareau, as well as the Attorney General regarding lemon laws (provided your state has one). The last thing a dealership wants is a tarnished reputation or their name in the news in a negative manner. Do all you can to get out of this deal. And if that fails, keep trying all your resources. You know as well as I do, they absolutely knew of the condition of the vehicle. Make them eat their ethics.
if they put it through such a rigirous test to inspect the car, run a check on it and all, why didn't carfax pick up on it, yet the body shop did? that right there doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.
I know when I signed up for CarFax before purchasing my wife's car, there are disclaimers that say their records are based on what they know or has been reported to them. When I was looking at one car, the report said that the carmaker (a Honda I think) didn't participate with the service, so records may not be accurate.
We bought anohter car (with a report that said all clear) and found that a side trim had been glued back on. I'm guessing because it was never reported and fixed by the previous owner, it was never on the report. Luckily, the car was still under warranty and the dealership fixed it under warranty despite the previous owner's poor attempt (which would normally void the warranty).
Also, I think CarFax also offers a free guarantee if you end up buying the car, and its suppsoed to offer to buy the car back if any of the reports are wrong. But I think you have to sign up yourself for the service and agree to update their records ont he car.
