Question Removing Smog Pump

Does anyone have any advice on what needs to be done to remove a smog pump from an 85 f150 with a carburated 351 HO? I would like to be rid of it. I am not necessarily interested in removing other emissions stuff, just this and the myriad of hoses that go with it. I am not in an area where testing is done.

If you want a little performance increase just take the belt to the pump off, but if you want to take the pump off to clean up the engine compartment....I'm not quite sure how to do that.

So it won't hurt anything if I just take the belt off? That's good to know. That may be a good alternative. Thanks!

If you have catalytic converters, removing the belt will cause them to overheat. I would suggest removing the cats & the smog pump & putting plugs in the smog passages in the rear of the heads. There may be more involved, but this is all I can think of right now.

no that is wrong, the air pump actually heats the catalyst up more.

My pump is froze up and the belt has been off for a long time, it has not hurt nothing so far. I plan on removing the pump sometime soon.

There may be some who disagree with me, but when your truck starts smelling like rotten eggs, you'll agree with me that your cats are overheating.

cat removal

Any advice on finding a muffler shop that will remove cats? I am not an exhaust system specialist by any means. Or is this a simple procedure?

more then likely you WON'T be able to find a shop that will remove them for you due to the epa blah blah and some other bull. your best bet is to cut em out yourself and take it to shop to have the pipe welded up.

the pump injects air into the exhaust stream between the converter and preconverter to help the main converter fire off, or heat-up faster.
