tie rod problems?

I have a 1998 f150 (4.6). My wife and I were pulling in to our driveway after having had the tires rotated and I lost control of the steering... the tires would not turn. When I investigated the problem I discovered that the tie rod arm had fallen off the "ball" connecting it to the steering shaft. Does anyone know if this was a recall item? Have you ever heard of this before?

There was a letter send out by ford (not a recall) about proper tie rod inspection. Do a search here for "tie rods" there's lots of info already posted.

mike...are you talking about the ball joint on the pitman arm? that letter adressed only the tie rod ends, i think inner and outer. if one failed, you would still feel some tighness from one wheel still "connected". if the joint at the pitman arm fell off, then you could spin the steering wheel round with one finger w/no friction/resistance at all. Scary!! i have seen no posts on this particular ball joint. I did a bit of research on the tie rod end business (other websites) and sounds like they mostly come apart at slow speeds and turning like a sharp slow turn into your drivway. i don't remember any reports of them failing at hiway speeds. Me not take any chances. i'm Moog all the way! my $.02 worth pr

Paul... it is the pitman arm ball joint that came apart. Do you think that the garage may have done something when they lifted it to rotate the tires?

Thanks

I've never seen a pitman arm fail on one of these trucks either.
I don't think there is any way it could have been damaged when the truck was lifted.
One thing that may have been damaged from spinning the steering wheel too far though is the clock spring. The clock spring is in behind the steering wheel. It electrically connects the steering column to the steering wheel switches for the horn, cruise control and for the air bag.
