I went to pickup my new 99' F-250 diesel from the dealer today and it wouldn't start. It was REALLY blowin' white smoke out to tail pipe but she wouldn't start. Now as a small diesel mechanic (Kubota, Deere, Yammar) I diagnosed it as a glow plug problem. They're not getting hot enough or something. I test drove the truck on Wednesday and it started right up. She's got 92,047 on her and barks when she runs. :-) My friend had a 95' Power Stroke and in 4 years he replaced 3 glowplug relays in 5 years. Is there any KNOWN or even unknown problems with the 7.3 glow plug system?
Since it was USED by 2 other owners and bought USED by me on 3-26-05 I have no service records or even the manuals! All I know is that that'd dealer better have whatever it needs first thing monday mornin', 'cause I really wanna start driving her!
I called a buddy of mine and he said from what I described, it was most likely a glow plug relay that went out. Only costs about 50 to 60 to replace by my local Navistar dealer.
I would still check inservice date - any Ford dealership can check from the serial number.
CLICK HERE to go to an excellent how to article on the glow plug system by Carpentractor. The article is specific to the 94-97 trucks but the principles are the same. Your truck has one plug for each side of the engine instead of two and you will have two relays to the passenger side of the fuel filter housing instead of one. The taller of the two powers the glow plugs, the shorter powers the intake air heater. They are not interchangeable.
I have the article saved in MS Word format if you want a copy - shoot me an eMail with GLOW PLUG INFORMATION in the subject line and let me know what eMail address you would like me to use. I will reply with an attachment if you would like a copy.
