my parents have an 04 reg cab short bed STX 4x4 with the 4.6. Is it a drag truck? no but the power is there when you need it. I have personally white smoked the tires on wet roads without power braking. besides, the power doesnt really come on till over 2000 rpm, so it might feel a lil sluggish off the line.
and on the topic of 1997 supercab shortbed 4x4 4.6 with 5 speeds...i own one and the thing will flat out scoot! (BTW, its forsale. check it out in the classefieds of this site)

I must be one of the few that actually likes the 4.6. It's no powerhouse, but it's durability and reliability history are beyond reproach, and it's got enough guts as long as you're not towing anything heavy. Obviously, being first off of the stoplight had better not be a priority.
re: Hemi. It'll pass everything but a gas station. The only gripe I hear from Dodge owners is about the gas mileage.
i agree with PB. but the 5.4 is lucky to keep up I think, and with that if that hemi is a not a tow engine and it has more hp than the 5.4 that is not saying much for Ford.
It sounds to me like you have inferiority complex. A situation in which if you get the Ford you will always be dreaming of a HEMI and if you get the HEMI you will always wonder what the Ford was like. Bottom line. Go to GM and get the 8.1 Vortec and kiss them all goodbye. muahahaha
I'd definately get the hemi. I got two friends who own each and the hemi will kill a 5.4 seven ways from sunday. i drove my friends 5.4 and theres no way that thing makes 300hp not a chance.
In 25 years, my wife and I have rarely had a disagreement over her transportation. It happened in '01, when she talked me into buying her a loaded Grand Caravan. It looked OK, it drove OK, and it wasn't in the shop a lot...but I hated that rig from the day we bought it until the day I drop-kicked it out of the driveway. One night, my wife finally sat me down and asked "I don't know what you have against that Caravan. It drives nice, I like it...what's the problem." "The problem," I answered, "Is that we went out to look for a Mercedes Wagon, and came home with a freakin' Chrysler. It's the wrong half of the Daimler-Chrysler equation. I've never owned a Chrysler, I've never wanted to own a Chrysler, and I'll never own one again." The Expedition was in the driveway two weeks later. I wanted a Navi- but I was flexible.
Sooo...back to this Hemi thing. I don't care if the darned thing has 600 HP and gets 30 mpg- that Ram-thingie just kills it for me.
ITS A MINIVAN!!! Put aside the Chrysler part and its still a minivan, thatd be enough for me to say "No way, No how, No minivan is ever going to use MY driveway, even if it needed to turn around!!"
The 5.4 has *****. Needs a 5-speed tranny for sure, but dont ever say it doesnt compare to a "hemi". The old 4.6 had ***** as well, it was relatively quick, even with the automatic.
Well, with three kids and two big dogs, whatever she drives has got to have a lot of room. I should have just bought her another 'Burb, but prices escalted to where I thought a late-model Merc Wagon made more sense. She's just not a high-end luxo car kind of person (I should have known better- I mentioned before I married a redneck girl).
Nothing wrong with a Min-Van...one of them is hauling around our next..

I dont care who rides around in one. I can see the purpose for people with lots of kids, and need a people hauler, but for me a crew cab would do the same job and still look better, have more power, and more cababilities. IMO the minivans have nothing exciting to offer, and they all suffer from being but-ugly. This is my opinion, no offense to anyone on here that might like them. I'm a hardcore truck guy, so thats why I feel this way.
Nick- the difference between a crew cab and a mini-van or SUV is that third child- unless you want to hear "don't touch me!" for the entire length of any road trip you take.
I said yes to the Caravan because it was a unique deal. We found it in Nanaimo with a few thousand miles on it, and it had every available option on it. By the time you factored in exchange rates, costs to bring it down, convert speedo, docs, etc- it worked out to about 45% of new price.
