I have a 1986 F-150 4x4 with the 351 W-HO engine. While towing the trailer last weekend, the Emissions light on the dash came on, and won't go off! Within the last 600 miles, I have replaced the smog pump, and the entire exhaust system, including the cat. converter. BTW, it passed the emissions testing with flying colors about 2 months ago. Any suggestions on where to start will be greatly appreciated!
Go to this site <a href="http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html">http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html</a> There you will find a test to retrieve the code{s} that are stored in the PCM {computer} and also what each one stands for. Then you will have to troubleshoot the particular system involved before just changing parts. If you get the code{s} out and can't figure it out, post your info. here and I'll follow up.

I have an 86 F150, 351W. I believe the emissions light comes on after so many miles tick past on the odometer. We don't have the computer I think the first responder mentioned. That came out the next year. Anyway, maybe someone can verify what I've said.
I have an 86' f-150 efi and last winter at about 60k miles my emissions light came on and I took it to the local ford dealer and they told me that there was no problem and that the light was just set to turn on after so many miles so you would bring it in for service. They also said that there is no reset for that paticular type of light and the only way they could turn it off was to unhook it. I asked them if this would harm any of the emissions equipment and they said no. And as of last emissions test it passed with no problems. Good Luck, Dan
easy one.The lamp is connected to (depening on vehicle specifics) your 02 sensor, you might have cooked it pulling the trailer up a grade or...
I've even warped exhaust manifolds pulling two overweight horses in an old "bulletproof" horse trailer. you can probably find it on or around the exhaust manifold or check out a manual at your local parts shop, it'll even give you troubleshooting ideas and replacement instructions
then like the book'll say disconn. the neg.batt. cable for a while the comp. should reset.
Bam*** no more lamp.
good luck>

On the newer vehicles the O2 sensor is often the culprit for the CHECK ENGINE light, along with any of the numerouse emission control,or vacume(diesel only)sensors. Replacing the failed sensor will solve the problem,(although I have(91 supercharged 460) an intermitten CHECK ENGINE light coming on and not going off untill I stop and restart the motor since I added an in cab MSD timing adjuster, and billet distributer???).With the older system though I believe the EMMISION light was controled by milage only but I always thought it was resettable. In any case other than being annoying,it shouldnt be something to loose sleep over.

I have an 87 Bronco II with an emissions light. It comes on after the engine has been on for the specified number of hours (not mileage). It's just a warning that it's time for everything to be checked. I don't know about your model, but there was a way to reset mine. I had to remove my glove compartment and press a reset switch for fifteen seconds while the ignition switch was in the "on" position. My guess it that yours can be reset as well.
I will look up the reset procedure tomorrow for you and post if no one beats me to it. It comes on based on odometer reading and you are supposed to check emessions equipment and reset light or disable it.
1985-87 LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS Control unit for maintenance reminder light is located under dash, near steering columnor behind glove box. Some models use non resettable control unit. Replace it with a resettable type. (1)To reset SRI, turn ignition off. Remove tape over reset hole in timer.Lightly push a small phillips screwdriver into hole in timer unit marked RESET. With light pressure on screwdriver, turn ignition switch to RUN position. (2) Light should stay on while screwdriver is pressed down. Hold screwdriver down for approximately 5 seconds. Remove screwdriver. Light should go out in 2-5 seconds. If light does not go out , repeat steps 1) and 2). (3) Cycle ignition from off to run position. Light should glow for 2-5 seconds. This verifies proper reset of maintenance reminder light. Hope this is helpful.
