Hello guys,
I have been still trying to figure out a bracket for my power steering, and thought that in the near future, I would end up going with a serpentine setup, and some nice brackets. If I do this, finding a matching pulley for my Chrysler steering box might be ANOTHER pain. I figured it might just be easier to buy a new ford pump. (Im trying not to get junkyard parts this time around) My engine is a 1979 302, and was wondering if I have to get a pump from the same year, or will the bracket mount be the same on something of similar year. The aluminum pulley set Im looking at says it fits up to 1978. Are the mounting holes different for 79 and up?
What should I do, and what are you guys with Volare clips, and Ford power steering using?
I have a friend with a 56 with the volare clip. It has a 302 and a Ford pump. He's thinking about going to a Mopar pump. I haven't driven it but he says it steers way to easy, that he can't feel the road. Mine has the Mopar pump like yours and as you know it steers great, just like a nice car......

You will not likely get an answer here, to the 78 to 79 difference question. Everything on the front of my engine is 79 LTD serpentine. I have the EZ steer that xfordman describes. Heidts sells an adjustable pressure regulator. I never priced it. Please share the info if you do.
I went to the salvage yard and found a Ford 302 with power steering and bought just the bracket. As I recall it was in an 84 Bronco. Then I went to the parts store and got a pump for the same year. I also have Volare but I haven't noticed it being too "easy" to steer. Ford brackets are a pain. Seems like they changed them all the time instead of standarizing.
You can always use an electric powered steering pump. The Toyota MRII, Subaru, Volkswagon, all used them. Look on Ebay there is always several listed there.

They were horrible during the 70s and 80s. If you try to combine components from various model years you are in for some pain. I had a nightmare trying to mix and match a complete set of accessories, brackets and pulleys. I finally tossed it all in the trash and took the entire front off a salvage yard engine. The only way I will ever do it from now on. You still aren't safe unless you rob the waterpump, sometimes the balancer etc. Even if you aren't going to use it, I found it easier to figure out once I had the old stuff available to match up. A quick look through the buyers guide section will show a dozen different smallblock waterpumps with various boss heights and waterhose outlet configurations.
Rich.... mine was together when I bought it. I am getting ready to have a do over on the motor mounts, and I think I might try to improve the ps mount also.

Thought I'd jump in here; I'm running a 302 from 90 Crown Vic; and willl be deleting the A/C.
I'm going to keep as much of the pollution, carbon canister, air pump etc, so need someones help with how to run the belt for air pump. Is this going to be a stock belt from a vehicle without A/C?
