garage floor

I am in the planning mode for my new garage. Where I want the garage to go is currently on an asphalt drive. Do I have to remove the asphalt to put down concrete? can I just pour over the asphalt?
Thanks

Best bet is to remove the asphalt.
Concrete has fantastic compressive strength, but witout a proper base of ballast and incorporated reinforcement it will disappoint you.

In my opinion if you are pouring 4 inches or more it should be okay.I would suggest consulting a professional.Good Luck!

Depending on the building codes in your area you will also have to dig down, pour a footing and frost walls in colder climates. It's 42" in Ct. where I live.

The asphalt has to go. It's not a stable or approved base for your new garage.

Picture this: You have just finished your new garage with concrete over ashphalt. It's the first real warm day, and the tar in the ashphalt is starting to melt. Hmm, what could possible happen next? At best, the floor will crack, at worst, the walls will sink unevenly. Either way, not a good way to break in a shop.
