302 ignition help

Hi all its been awhile since my last post, but have a new ride and need more help!! I have a 1988 full size Bronco with a 302 fuel injected. The other day while driving down the road it just died.It did not have spark so I put in a new igniton modular. It ran great for 2miles then died agian.I took it back and they checked it and it was bad. They gave me a new one and this one ran for about 6miles and then the same thing. Also replaced the coil. Then also replaced the ignition modular agian. It ran good for about 6miles and died agian.Any help will be VERY WELCOME. Thanks a millon. All advice I've ever got here has been good!!

wow...three TFI modules in one day. I'm speculating...but sounds like something is shorting out or burning out. Did they put Di-electric grease on the back of the TFI module? Check your codes? maybe check your electrical wiring and also your PIP (inside ur dizzy)? post back and tell us what you find.

you need to dismantle the whole dizzy at the gear. check to see if you get a code for it? i believe its code 14. and then check all the wirings around there.

Check the link in my signature for info on pulling the codes fromt eh main computer on your truck. The PIP (Profile Ignition Pickup) sensor is UNDER the metal ring in the distributor that triggers it. In order to remove it, you must remove the distributor gear which requires removing the dizzy from the engine. Thats why tHeCoS suggested pulling the codes first. If there is no code showing a failed PIP, then it will save you a lot of time, effort and money. The idea being, why replace it unless you are sure you need to.

If the ICM (TFI) keeps failing, check for a short in the wiring to it. Also make sure you apply the heat transfer compound liberally when you replace it.

You should replace the relay next to it too. I forgot the name I think its ECU relay, but its the exact same relay as the fuel pump relay. Doesn't hurt to replace that too while you're in there. If you don't have a haynes manual yet, get one. Because it will tell you step by step. I'd tell you to get your ohms meter out and start finding out closed /opened loops and look at all your wiring for breaks/burnt/cuts/loose connections.

get spark, first! your fuel pump doesn't have anything to do with your spark. test your fuel pressure at the schrader valve.
