i have a 78 bronco with 411 gears. i would like to run 33 or 35s. i am finally starting to rebuild the truck. i got a 351m in that needs rebuilt. i was wondering if anybody had any ideas for a more efficient engine to rebuild. maybe 289, 302, 390. something that can give me mabe 380-410 ft/lbs torque and around 280-315 hp. and somewhat decent gas mileage. any ideas or theories would greatly be appreciated! thanx in advance
I have a 78 bronco, with 411 gears, 6" of lift, and 36" tires. I blew a head gasket on the origanal 351M. I built a 351M into a 402. I never had it tested for horse power or torque, but I was verry happy with it. Decent milage, all things considered. Excellent power through all ranges.
ive got a van with a 351 runs real decent and not too bad of mileage I also have a 4x4 with a 460 all kinds of power mileage not near as good as 351, but good for pulling a heavy trailer or boat, I have a stock 360 in a 73 with 411 gears 4 spd fair on power typical fuel mileage about 14 max, if you cant make a 351 run, try the 460, but you can watch the gas gauge move almost by the minute. a 400 built will fly but gas not too cheap here either. they can all be made to run. just takes $$$
tasdevil did you use a 400 crank and pistons for your 402? did you bore 30 over? i was thinking of makinf my 351 into a 400. it would be appreciated if you could give me some insight on what you did and what was involved in making the 402 thanx!
I did use a 400M crank, with 351M block and heads, board .030 over. The block was also line board, and the heads gone through. The pistons are the same 351M and 400M. Of course you"ll need pistons if you boar it out. All that = 402cid. As far as the rest of it, I'm not sure what you need. Mine is in a 78 bronco with 6" of lift, 4.11 gears , and 36" tires. I built it for torque as well as hourse power. If you want, I can get into the rest of what I did.
I think you should use whatever it originally came with. Less money than to swap a different motor in.
That being said, I am personally partial to the FE series. A mild 390 would more than meet the numbers you set forth, and you wouldn't have to rev it up much to get it. They are quite reliable too. You do give up a little weight against say a 351 or 302, but they do weigh less than a 460.
So if you dont know what it came with originally, build the engine series you know best. This should give the best results since you'll better be able to tailor the build to your needs. If you dont know any better than any others, then I recommend the FE. Easy to learn and work on, reliable, and powerfull. If you want to know more, dont hesitate to drop by the FE forum and ask away.
i like the fe family very much. i had a 352 in a 65 galaxie before and it moved pretty good. i wouldn't mind a 390. stock alone they have pretty good power. i wouldn't have to sink a lot of money on performance parts. thanx for the info
