I dont have a truck yet but I have been looking for a 4x4 lately. I have found an 86 F150 4x4 in good shape, no body rust, brand new 302 V8. about $4400.
My question is.. is there any problem areas of this truck that I should look into? I like the body style of this year but if a few years plus or minus makes a big difference in the quality of truck, I would consider otherwise. How bout the price?

An 86' is a very good truck. I still think about the one I had. One thing to think about is that the newer trucks are fuel injected. 80' to 86' I feel had a cool body style. Have you driven it yet? A friend of mine had a 250 with the same engine. The engine seemed sluggish but that was a 250. That was a heavier truck but if you knew how to drive it you could still make it do a trick or two. The main question is, "where do you think the truck may have been driven?". If it looks clean then I would say try to knock them down a little. If it looks a little rough, then try to knock them down more. 4x4's do keep there value but I feel that that price is a little high. If you really like it, than knock a little and go for it. Good luck. Jake.
I Purchased a 1986 f150 302 automatic 4x4 about a year and a half ago. The engine is basically shot but that is with 320,000km, when I got it the body had lots of surface rust but I delt with that so it was good. I also bought an 86 f150 xlt lariet to use as a parts truck, it also has the 302 and I am busy changing a whole wack of stuff. I love the body styles of these years between my Dad and Myself over the last 2 years we have had an 84, 2 85's and 2 86's. We haven't had a lot of problems with them, the master Cylinders have had to replaced in most of them but that is not a big deal. The only thing is most 86's were Electronically Fuel injected (thats the year they changed them over) which means they are a pain to work on. I would be worried about the body though, if it looks like it has been worked on then you don't no how long it is going to last but if the Body is good and it runs well then I would say $3500 is a pretty decent deal so see what you can do.
