A lot of PS pulleys are out of alignment with the crank when factory new. In and out spacing as well as the crank and pump shafts not parallel to each other. With age the rubber on the cast iron pump bracket rots away as well as different people working on it that drop the spacers and not reinstall. Each one is different so you must make corrections per vehicle.
My crank pulley has two grooves. The alternator is in the groove closest to the block and the PS pump is in the front groove. I do not have AC.
Since the PS Pump Pulley is ahead of the crank, I tried removing that spacer (approx 1/4 inch thick washer) that is currently between the bracket and block also holds the dipstick bracket). When I took it out then the pump pulley was no longer parallel to the crank pulley......as there is no way to remove a corresponding amount of thickness at the two mounting points on the water pump housing. I mean, it was waaay out of parallel.
I was looking at the crank pulley...it is two pulleys nested one inside the other. I suppose that I could space the PS pulley on the crank out a bit from the alternator sheave, but that would require spacers for the attaching bolts (3) and the crank bolt (1 huge fella). I worry about reducing the number of threads in the crank bolt.
Any other suggestions or guidance?
So, maybe the belt will track OK with my little bit of out-of-alignmnent! Besides the belt jumping off track, I guess I was most afraid of some perfectionist looking under my hood and noticing.
We demand perfection, you want sloppy get a Chebby. Have seen many pumps out of alignment without any problems. What about the thrust surfaces inside the power steering pump with the belt misaligned and constantly pulling inward or outward? Got ya worried.
Gee!
I'd hate to have someone spot and bring a potential problem to my attention!
Then I wouldn't be able to buy those cool pink neon lights for the undercarriage of my Dumped pickup!
I'll even bet that I set a record for having over 1,000 miles on my 4 SPACESAVERtires on my honda civic (with the pushbar on the trunk)!

When I install Hurst Floor Shifter, instead of D for drive it's gonna say F for Full Speed Ahead!
I keep the marker lights in the bed. Right next to the trolling motor!
Boy, it sure is great to be insane.
