hey guys, i went wheelin today and gotto the very end of the trail and smelt tranny fluid. sure enough it was drippin out pretty good. i let it cool down and then it just let a few drops go...i noticed that it was dripping out of what looked like a small hole in the front of the transmission where it meets the motor. does anyone have any ideas on what this problem might be, or has had something similar happen? as of right now it runs, shifts and drives fine, but its better to be safe than sorry. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
have no idea if this will help, but I oveheated a C-6 a few years back plowing and getting stuck, got 'ur out but she was leaving two blood trails for 500' up the drive, thought for sure it was gone. Parked it and let it cool dumped 2 qts. of type F in (est. loss) ck'd it 2 more, looked under with a grimmace on my face and to my suprise, no leak and the tranny for the next two yrs. was better than ever.
Sounds like you overheated the tranny and it burped out of the vent tubes. I'm sure it wasn't the best thing you could have done to it but, I'd just change the fluid and filter and not worry about it. You also might want to consider getting a temp. gauge for your tranny so you don't do it again.
Thanks, I never knew there was an overflow for the tranny. I had a Ranger and everytime I would tow my boat, and it was hot out, it would blow all kinds of tranny fluid out. Then once it cooled down it wouldn't leak a drop, until the next time I would tow my boat.
thanks guys that helps a ton. i think ill do as JC said and get a gauge....i was just worried that it was gunna be a new tranny and i definetly dont have the kind of money haha. thanks guys, ill keep yall posted!
Also, if you find you have a continuing problem with overheating you could upgrade to a radiator from a later model super duty. The 99's only had the air to water cooler for the transmission whereas they later upgraded to having both the air to water cooler and a cooler integrated in the radiator. I can't remember the year but I think the change happened for 00, 01 at the latest.
