ive been following this forum for a while and have found everyone to be helpfull.i had asked a while back if the trany and drive shaft were interchangeable between a 79 f100 and a 82 f100. i now have a new question i hope you can help with. i would like to put an automatic trany with overdrive in my 82. what years can i use and is there one from any cars that will fit useing my drive shaft or will i need to get a new one? i'm dropping in a 302 at the same time. someone told me i could use a trany out of a mustang is this true? i would prefer one out of a truck but will take one from a car if i have too.
thanks for your help

you can use car transmissions. also, getting driveshafts made or cut to fit is pretty easy. you will drive yourself nuts trying to find shafts that are the right length already.
find a driveshaft shop, welder who does them or a truck shop that does big rigs, or a 4wd shop. all of these should be able to help you. you can also mail order from places like denny's driveshaft.
I have an 82 f100 just finished taking out my 6 for a 351 and put a aod from 88 tbird with b&m floor shift. Love it so far. Found driveshaft right length and boneyard.
I believe it was from another truck, but not sure. I had a hot rod shop do the swap for me. I know he said he just took the measurements to a local ford boneyard and was able to get a stock one to fit.
that hotrod shop probably charged you for his time in going to the boneyard to get the shaft unless you were really lucky.
you can find the right length, but you also have to have correct u-joint size and spline count on slip joint if applicable.
