I've never used a tuner before so have no knowledge of them other than the specs I've read at Motorhaven. I have a 2005 F250 with the 6.0 PSD. I do tow, but the boat & trailer is under 8500lbs total. I have no mods to this truck currently, except for a Clifford alarm / remote start system. This tuner might be the only mod I do.
Which tuner is recommended and why? The Predator or the Superchips?
Do tuners void the manufacturer warranty on the engine?
Do either of these tuners leave a code in the vehicle ECM that would alert a dealer that a tuner has been used?
Can a tuner be used to set the ECM back tot eh stock setting?
For this truck, is there anything I need to do (dealer flash, etc.) before using the tuner?
I know there are many people here using these tuners so I'm looking for your opinions and experiences with them to help me decide. Thanks for any input!
1. Generally for towing in excess of 8K I recommend the Superchips, if you tow a lot because many people tend to prefer its shift for heaving towing. If you don't two often, some prefer the Predator's shift but it has a "learning curve" on the computer of a few ignition key cycles.
2. Its pretty much the same as with most aftermarket parts: Installation of the part doesn't void the warranty but if Ford can prove aftermarket part causes damage they do not have to cover that damage but in most cases the remainder of warranty issues are intact. Check with your local dealer as well, many of them treat aftermarket items differently.
3. No, when you restore the original backup program into the computer there is no code left behind.
4. Yes.
5. No. However, only use the tow settings with those loads unless you get an EGT gauge (and recommended: exhaust) so you can make sure exhaust temps are reasonable.
