I'm new to the forum as you could tell. I'm having some troubles finding a forum about vehicles 98 and older. I have a 96 Explorer. My check engine lights came on the other day and comes on every time I start it. I ran the self system check the explorer has and it said everything is okay. Any ideas?
Your local auto parts store should be able to pull the code for you, usually for free. If not, most decent independent sp shold be able to pull the code and there's always the dealer. It could be jst about anything. When mine did this it was the O2 sensor.
Autozone will pull the codes for free.
Give them a call first to make sure they have the scanner.... most share a scanner between stores.
Let us know what the codes are so we can help you fix the problem.
As 99X said, Autozone will pull the codes for you. They will also try and sell you the parts at the same time. I suggest posting the codes here before buying the parts.
the code read for an oxygen sensor. and he said it was on the front passenger side, but got under the vehicle and found the driver side sensor. i changed that one and it was still on Auto Zone said you guessed it "that is the driver's side not the passenger" anyone know where the passenger's side sensor is?
I have '96 with the 5.0V8 and the passenger side O2 sensor is located in the exhaust pipe between the exhaust manifold and the catalytic convertor. It's mounted on teh top of the exhaust pipe, I used the offset O2 socket fron the local auto store.
hm.. my father and I found the O2 sensors. Well, I should say sensors.. for which there are two right next to each other and one behind a little. I have a few questions. Should the front two on the passenger side be crossed? this is hard to explain.. the front sensor was plugged into the back of the other end. and the back sensor was plugged into the front of the other side.. hm.. that didn't really make sense. just think of a X. that's how they were plugged in. now. my questions are, 1. which is the Bank 1 sensor 1. and 2. how do we take it off. we got up under and I could get one arm up to it, but couldn't manage to get my other up there to pull. we took off the tire, as well as the splash gaurd. no go.. is there some tool? or another way to get up there?
