Finally....... After four attempts a bunch of exhaust shaking, alignment and two turbo pedestals, and numerous hours in a Taurus loaner, my most excellent Ford Dealer and Diesel Tech have solved my 04's issues.
Seems they just came out with a more robust pedestal (heavier) since some of the other fixes had'nt quite removed the buzz. No more buzz, just nice smooth power and that great turbo whine.
They also discovered a couple of bad tires on my truck and in the end replaced all four with Michelins. What a difference.
hey whats this moan you speak of? My truck, 05 with an 03 turbo just started making a whine I have never heard. I can't really describe it, you really just have to hear it to know. And I think you would know what I'm talking about if you have experienced it too. whats your noise? and what was it caused by?
Thanks,
Tim
My 05 has amoan sound at about 70 mph towing a 10,000 lb. toy hauler. I thought it sounded like an air intake noise. Truck is stock except for SCMT. Great truck 2,000 miles. Any other opinions abou this noise.

Hiflyer, there has been numerous posts regarding a exhaust resonance/turbo moan/droan sound. I think there are one or two TSBs regarding this. Its a low buzz/droan sound and or vibration (definitely not a whine) around 1200 to 1500+/- rpms. Some trucks do it, some don't. My opinion is that all do it, some worse than others. I hadn't really noticed mine when new, but my dealer did and did the TSB which made it worse. Its fixed now and back to the way it was new. I just had the downpipe replaced and a new pedestal installed, exhaust realigned and everything is good.
Well the turbo is bought off of an 03 truck that was parted out. but the downpipe is stock 05. But the noise is very odd. It never did it before. I just wonder if something got into the bearing, or something. I just don't know. If it did, we should know pretty quickly Well I'll keep searching, I try and find out what rpms it does it mostly, and other symptoms. THanks guys.

Had my turbo ped replaced and exhaust neutralized. Only made the droan worse and more wide spread across the rpm range. Is so bad now I hate driving the truck.
This "turbo moan", is it a low moaning sound between 1200 & 1500 rpm. I noticed a strange sound with my '05 and it seems rpm dependant. Not too loud but I can hear it, its not high pitched like a tubo whine. If this what I am hearing is it worth trying to get it fixed?
I'm out of town this weekend, but will scan my repair order and find the part number for the pedestal. My advice is, unless your turbo moan is really bad, don't go to have it fixed. The fix usually makes it worse (my opionion). Mine was fixed a couple of times, and ended up like Jorzac's. A buzz and moan from idle all the way up to 2,000 rpms. I hated driving the truck. My tech told me that he worked with Ford's HOTLINE in combo with this heavier ped to return mine to normal. Mine felt like the exhaust was coming off the vehile.
Talk to you diesel tech and find out how successful they have been with this issue and how many units they currently have with this problem. My tech has been really honest with me over the past year regarding these problems and fixes.
