My starter went out. I go to change it and it's pressing directly against the headers. I tired wiggling it around and could not figure out how to get this starter out. Don't tell me I'm gonna have to drop the headers to replace the starter. Anyone got any ideas how I can get starter past the headers?
You will probably have to unbolt the header from the head, and it should move over enough to get the starter out. I have the same combo, 76 highboy 390 and just installed headers and had to take the starter back out to replace the cable. I had to unbolt the headers to get it out. Also, are you taking the starter down under the motor, or out the side through the fender ? I dont have any fender liners on my truck and taking it out the side through the opening between the fender and frame makes it easy. Another tip if you havent done so yet is to replace the starter cable while it is out, especially if it is the stock tiny gauge cable. I think the new one I got is 1 or 2 gauge from Napa.
Yup, header and starter have to be installed together, no way around it. Also it would be a good time to add some heat shielding to stop it from eating up another starter.
Boy, this sounds like a case where I get to pat myself on the back again for purchasing the "expensive" L&L headers.
It takes all of maybe 30 seconds (if I'm real tired) to drop that starter out the bottom. I'd get some L&L's and save the sweat - you've got better things to sweat over...
