hi all, new here just got my license and i wanna add a little more power to the 00 ranger that is finally mine, its 4WD with the 3.0L engine. i love this truck by the way, very beefy and id like to take it off-road at some point. anyway from my research ive found that K&N make a s fuel injection performence kit(cold air intake) that is suposed to add 19HP for 260 bucks and JBA makes a set of bolt on headers for about 450 that are suposed to give 7-10HP. but thats all i could find for this truck and i wanted to get opinions before i buy anything.
i got the truck used and it has an altered exhaust system, it splits after the muffler and the two pipes come out the back instead of the side. i think the catilitic converter and the muffler are stock. would a new exhaust system be a better upgrade, and what would i need for a true dual?
sry for such a long first post
thanks for help on any of my many questions
Chris
You aren't gonna see 19 hp gains from the K&N intake. Personally I don't think they're worth all that much (if anything) over stock, but K&N sells a lot of them, so to each his own I suppose. I'd have more faith in the headers adding some real (if not small) performance gains but $450 is a lot skins. A good exhaust system is worthwhile, maybe some of the guys and gals around here can give you some feedback on that (many people like Gibson, for example).
When you are done tinkering around with other mods, consider a custom-burned chip. They provide the best bang for your buck (as told by those who have done it).
All that being said, I hope you intend on driving carefully and staying alert at all times while you get to know the roads and your Ranger a little better.
Welcome Chris. If you use the Search feature you will find many posts on power from a 3.0. Just remember it is a small displacement engine pushing around a lot of weight so don't expect a neck-snapper.
