On my 4.9L F-150, I had a mileage problem wherein I was only getting 10-12 mpg with 3.55 gearing and an EFI I6. This, I thought, was too poor, so I tried to fix the problem. Many attempts later, I asked around here and received advice that the cats might be clogged. So, I recently welded a replacement cat into place where the stock cat(s?) arrangement used to reside, reset the ECM, and went about my way. $175 and 6 hours of trick welding work later (went to the local auto parts store for a straight-through cat, was not going to pay out the nose for a Ford OEM replacement), and the new cat has paid for itself many times over with the-now 15-17 mpg of my truck. Thx. guys for the advice.

OK, i know this is beating a dea horse, but is it a CA truck? I've been looking to do the same to mine (for the same reasons) but am not sure about what's legal and what's not. Does anyone know if it's legal to switch over to one high flow cat in CA?

No this is not a California truck; I'm from NY (although the emissions regs are nearly the same for newer-model vehicles...it's now called the "California and Northeast Emissions Group" when you go to buy a new vehicle). As for the legality of this swap in Ca., I'm sure it's illegal. I'm surprised they allow their inhabitants to pass gas without licensing their butts and making each get a "CARB approved for emissions" tattoo.

Do you have dual cats or single? How much do the they run?

I'm interested because I've been fighting the steady 13 mpg my truck gets ('95 F150 4x4, 3.55s, 5speed). I'd also like to help the top end a little. Does do notice any difference climbing hills at 65+?
