I have a 03 F250 SD CC The other day I started to put the key in the ignition and it would go only half way in. I played with it and then got it in far enough that the buzzer went off. I jiggled the key and the igniton turned and started the truck but the key wasn't hardly in the ignition. I drove it home with no key in ignition.I have had problems at times that the key would have a hard time going into the ignition. Or the key would go in but ignition switch would be hard to turn.Anyone else have this problem and what did they do to correct it. Thanks!!!!
I've got a 02 Explorer with that same problem but it happens every time I try to insert the key. The only way I can get it in every time is to jam it in really fast. If I try to do it slow, it gets stuck, and is sometimes hard to get out.
I put some lub8 on it which is a pin sized (liquid) lubricating tip that I typically use to lube locksets and what not. I moved the key in and out several times to work the lube in, but I'm still having the problem. I don't have a problem turning the key, just getting into the ignition initially is the issue.
Some locks use a dry lube and some a liquid. Don't mix the two or it will gum things up. If you use a liquid. Pull the key out each time and wipe it off. The will help clean out any junk. We every you do DON'T use WD40. This will kill the lock. Use graphite on dry and LPS1 for liquid. Both are available at ACE or Truevalue. The big box stores don't care LPS1.
Good info Function12. Thanks.
I've already used a wet lube. How long will it take to get that out before I can try a dry, or am I just stuck with the wet stuff for eternity?
By the way, if the problem persists, how hard is it to just replace the ignition switch?
