new member with a question

Hi all. as a new member, i think i should introduce myself before asking any questions. my name is tom, and i have a collection of fords, ranging from a 65 falcon to a 99 crown vic p71 interceptor.

the vehicle i am currently having a small problem with is my 88 superduty 4X4 diesel, with banks turbo. i am in the finishing stages of converting from a 5 speed to a C6 automatic, after the transfer case chain seperated at 60 mph, locking up, and jack knifing me on a back road while delivering a 73 cougar convert with 351 cleavland and 4 speed.

i have a question about the injector pump. i need to add a link to the throttle shaft for the downshift linkage, and need to know if i can do this myself, or do i have to remove the pump and take it to a rebuilding shop. specifically, i need to remove the throttle shaft from the pump to place the link behind the throttle lever, then put the shaft back into the pump

That piece just bolts on your existing pump arm. Any old 6.9 auto pump should have it on there.

the downshift link on the 88 7.3 goes over the throttle shaft, not bolted to it

Hmmm, that's a new one on me. Don't have any autos at the shop right now. I am putting a new engine together for an '88 stick today. I'll see what it looks like.

Hmmm, it looks exactly like a 6.9 pump. I think you're looking at it wrong. There's a little hole right above the pivot point, that is where you bolt the kickdown bracket. You will need the black vacuum valve for the other side of the pump too.

ok, i will look at it later. all the books show the link, but not how it is connected. i did answer my question last night though, i stopped at fleet services and they said you can not remove the shaft from the pump without rebuilding it.

But you don't need to remove it!

yup. i got hold of a new pump to look at the linkage, and it all looks so easy when you are not 6 feet in the air. found a linkage pin that fit in there perfectly, and all is well now. thanks!!
