Axle to Bed Clearance

Remember a few months ago when I told you my rearend was hitting my bed?

Well, I posted some pics in my gallery of my fix for the problem.

I'm not quite finished with it yet. I need to add corner trim pieces, but you get the idea. Don't pay any attention to the dust either. It's been a long winter in South Carolina.

purple 55, I checked out your bed mods for axle clearance, I would like to put this a nicely as I can without sounding too critical,

Because the wood grain is running across instead of with the bed wood grain I think it gives it an after thought look.

I love your truck or I wouldn't offer my opinion, but I think it could be better.

I'm trying to be honest, not mean,

Wayne

Greg... out of curiousity I photoshopped raising your bed floor in its entirety. This was just to see the effect... haven't thought out the how to do it part. You've got one fine looking truck.

best, himmelberg

I meant to say how far did you raise it up? And how much clearance do you have now?

Wow Greg, that looks like a lot of work! It looks good, but not great. If your truck was not so nice, I would say done. But, if it was mine, I would make the hump out of like boards, run them up and down and use the stainless strips in between. (As stated before) If not that route, then I have seen trucks that extend the fender wells all the way across. And that would give you more Purple. No offense intended. Just my 2 cent worth. Jag

1st of all, I don't mind the critiquing(?) at all ! Thats why I posted.I just wish I would have posted sooner.

B/B, it WAS an afterthought.I started laying my freshly varnished oak boards down and they were hitting on the axle and I said...... well, forget what I said, but I was alone and nobody heard me anyway.
I can still change it, but with all the coats of varnish that I need to apply and with everything else I need to do, it just won't be ready for Knoxville.
Sounds like a good excuse to me! Hey, at least it isn't as much work as installing/removing/installing /removing a volare front end.

FF, I raised it 4",which is about the same clearance between the axle tube and c-notch.I welded together a framework with angle iron and bolted it to my tubs.

Again, thanks for the comments/ideas guys. Let me go get busy now!

Greg

Sometimes you just have to make the best of it. (Not that I don't love your mod)

Here's what I would do to the boxed portion. Remove those shiny bed strips. Instead get some US Priority Mail stickers. (Their free at the post office) Put somebody's address on the box, and tell eveybody your fixin to mail this package when you get a minute.

Like I said, I love the mod and all just like it is. But if you ever decide you want a different look, perhaps use sheetmetal and put a tub between the wheel tubs. It could probably be downsized a bit. The similar shapes might blend pretty well. Probably cost you some more lumber though. But it might be worth it. But like I said, it looks great just like it is.

.
Why don't you tell me how you REALLY feel?

I was seriously thinking about bolting a Budweiser cooler with a false bottom over the axle. Refreshments AND axle clearance.
Bet you all would have liked that, huh?

Just wondering, but I wonder if you could use some oak veneer strips and sorta round the transition?

Oh how I wish you would have done that Greg. That would have been a mod fitting a REAL stock car pilot. Like I said, the lumber will seem like a bargain by the time I get through with you at the Nats. If you decide that sheetmetal is in your future, give me about two weeks notice and you could have some baby carriage bolts that would match your polished bed bolts perfectly. The only cost will be the grief you get here between now and then.

In my opinion, you are one of the best fabbers on this forum. I would not have the guts to fab a rear suspension from scratch like you did. But this bed trick is not the solution I expected from you. There, that's how I really feel. I know you'll get it squared away. And I'll enjoy the hell out of it until you do. Hopefully my seat won't be CootiePurpled when I get it back Friday.

Thank you for the kind AND critical words.

Seat? That reminds me of another great move I made about 2 weeks ago.

Lacking of space,I have my purdy seat that I bought a couple of years ago stored in my cluttered garage. It's covered in a couple of layers of plastic to keep the dirt and dog hair off.I was cutting a piece of metal with my torch and burned the never sat on velour covering along the front and drivers side.

Every project seems to have couple problem areas. Burning your seat must have made you sick. My challenge has been the seat and paint chips. I've painted parts of my truck two or three times. That ones on me because I painted WAY too early. Painted the flames in a cool garage and he overspray found places to stick I thought I had masked well.

Biggest problem has been the very few things I have hired out though. Had my rear axles redrilled for 4 1/2 bolt pattern. Big nightmare, doesn't look right to me. I may have to buy new axles. We'll see. Had my seat recovered. Looked nice on his shop floor, the guy charged me big and moved as I am installing and find out I can barely close the doors. Take it to another shop early December 04 and might get it back Friday. Or so he says. This will be at least the third time I was told it would be done real soon. If it doesn't happen there is no chance I have time to get the bugs out before the Nats. My work is sending me to Arkansas for a couple weeks so there is no time for further interior delays. Can't risk the vacation on an untested truck. Sure wish the Nats were a bit closer. 700+ miles is just a bit unrealistic for a first real test ride.
