1990, stock suspension. Quad front shocks. My shocks have at least 40K on them, and probably much more. They are not original though. I have all the receipts since new, or most I guess since I can't find anything about shocks there. But I think that it is replacement time.
I want to replace all six shocks. I do not care about fancy bling bling colored shocks with fancy boots, although I don't mind that if they prove to be the best shocks for my needs. But it's not a reason to buy. My Bronco is mostly street driven, and does some light duty off roading. I would like some shocks that ride nice and cushy on the street but can handle my light duty off roading and once in a blue moon trailering (6X12 U-Haul). Price is also a concern, since I have to buy six. My current shocks work well enough, I mean the truck does not bounce or wander. But they have a harsh feel to them, like when you hit some bad railroad tracks. I believe that they were cheapo shocks to start with and are now worn.
Any and all suggestions are welcomed.
BTW - Does anyone know about any shocks that would be sold at Goodyear? I suppose that they could get any shocks though. I may have to let them do it, since I am sorta broke at the moment and have a Goodyear credit card with enough on it to get the shocks done.
I was under the impression that rancho rs5000 shocks are good. I plan on getting these when i replace my old shocks some day. I have heard they are a good all around shock but I can't really say for sure since I haven't used any. Looks like they are around $40
I just installed 6 new Edelbrock IAS shocks @ 69.95 each x 6 = Ouch ! Anyway I'm very happy with them. I had the stock shocks with 40k on them and the difference is overwhelming. Their very responsive and not stiff at all. Very nice ride-for a Bronco anyway. I recommend them if the price doesnt overwhelm you.

That sounds nice. No, the price is not overwhelming if I can get them through Goodyear and put them on my card. I have also heard good things about those Ranchos that were mentioned - but I like how you say that the difference with the Edelbrocks is "overwhelming!" I have changed shocks on cars before and experienced that feeling. That's what I'm looking for. BTW - When did Edelbrock start making shocks?
I think Edelbrock has been making or distributing(whichever) shocks for at least 3-4 years. Could be longer however. Also I've heard only good things about Bilstein shocks as well. I've never used them but this board is full of good feedback on them.

They probably just leased out their name. But as long as they are good, that's ok with me. Maybe they manufacture them themselves though, I wouldn't know. I am going to look into them, along with the Ranchos and the Bilsteins (those have had a great reputation in the car world for years).
Should I bother looking at any Monroe shocks? Or are they just the cheap shocks that everybody buys?
i currently have some monroe gas magnum shocks on my bronco. I guess they were replacements for the stock shocks and I have no clue how long they have been on there but I think a very long time. I have had no problems with them so far and the ride is good but Im not sure HOW good it could get, say with other shocks. I will have to find out when I replace them.
I have the Rancho RS5000's on my 94. with the quad. shocks on the front. The Rancho's are a nice shock but you won't get a soft ride from them, if you like a firm ride you won't have any complaints. It rides like a 4X4 truck not a Crown Vic.

I think the Monroe Magnums are junk. The ones on my Bronco were only 2-3 years old, and all six were broken. Same goes for the cheapie regular truck ones that cost about $20. For a few dollars more, in the $30-$40 price range, you can get a decent street/offroad shock that will improve the ride dramatically. Something like a Rancho RS5000, Pro Comp ES3000 or ES9000 fit that range, and most have a lifetime warranty. I put the ES9000's on my Bronco after throwing out the Monroe's, and rode on those for about a year before getting my lift kit. Look around for sales on a set of shocks, there's usually a few good deals if you search the web. I have Rancho RSX shocks on an 85 K-10, and the adjustable RS9000X shocks on a 98 Z-71.
I replaced all 6 of mine with OE shocks from ford, I'm real happy with the ride, the truck drives like a cadilac down the highway and handles well on gravel roads at high speed, I think I spent $240 for all six, I changed them out myself...

That's a thought. Do you know who makes them, I doubt that Ford makes them in-house but it's possible.
thats a good question, the shocks are stamped with a small ford logo but this dos'ent nessesarlly mean they were made by ford, regardless they work great, the other thing on this subject, in the past I've bought shocks for trucks with tired and overloaded springs and did'ent notice much improvment in the ride, they were still bouncy, on my bronco, it has newer coil's and rear springs and I think with these and the new shocks is what gives the truck such a good ride...
At 80,000 miles I put Rancho 9000X shocks all around on my 94, quads in front. Had them adjusted in the front to '2' and in the back to '3' for the first 30,000 miles. Bumped them up one setting for the next 30,000 and one more bump 20,000 later, 160,000 total miles.. They still work well though it will be replacement time soon. The rear shocks are beginning to fade.
I'm buying Rancho 9000X series again because they worked so well on my Bronco.
My wife has a Safari van and it wallowed horribly so I tried the Edelbrock IAS shocks and don't notice much improvement. Wish they made Ranchos for it.
When I bought my 94 Bronco, it had Monroe Gas Magnums. They were bad!! I replaced them with KYB Gas-A-Just shocks. When I removed the Magnums, I could compress them very easily. On the other hand, the KYB Gas-A-Just were very strong. Once I got them installed, I noticed the truck actually sticking to the ground and they actually raised the body a little bit. When going around a turn in the road, the truck did not lean. However, the Gas-A-Just shocks made you feel every little imperfection in the road!! They were so stiff that they were rattling everything in the truck, including me!! About a year ago, I replaced the Gas-A-Just shocks with KYBs GR-2s. Better ride all around. Check out the Tire Rack. They seem to have the best prices.
