i just happened to look down at the rear end of my ranger and it looks like the bottom half is drenched in fluid..? but there is no leaks on the floor at all...? any idears?, thanks mike
Yea, I don't know that you will see any on the floor. Gear oil is really thick and only tends to leak when it is hot and under the built up pressure of driving.
it could be the vent hole is pluged it happened to my 89 ranger it was leaking at the pinion seal the hose that is connected to the vent was cracked and the vent was blocked cleaned it out no more leak
Ooops - I think I typed that wrong. How big of a job is it to replace the pinion seal? I'm thinking about doing it myself, and if not, wanna know what I ought to expect to pay for the repair.
I have never done one that I can remember, but I can imagine is too hard. If you don't have a Haynes or Chiltons I would suggest getting one. They do the best they can at step by step repairs.
Without mine infront of me I'd say dropping the drive shaft is no big deal. Removing the pinion yolk bolt is probably a pain, and you will likely need some sort of seal puller/installer. Just guessing. The part should be cheap, it looks like it is $15-$35 depending on what brand you get at Advance Auto. If you had a shop do it you should expect 1/2hr to 1hr labor. If they want anymore, the guy is REALLY goofing off under there.
Different models may have different locations, but mine was on the passenger's side of the differential above the driveshaft. It might have a lot of junk built up on it. If you can't find one, you shold at least have a vent tube or breather of some sort. I have seen guys fill from there too.
