What else did I mess up?

I accidentally overtightened a rocker arm on my 71 429. It bent one of the pushrods. I have replaced the pushrod, but now there is a ticking sound. I can't figure out if it is the lifter or the valve. Does anyone have any advice. Also this is a brand new motor fresh from the machine shop.

Have you tried to find the source of the tick using a mechanics stethiscope? You can also use a peice of broom stick or a long screw driver. Place the screw driver against the area you think it is coming from. Then move it around until you get the loudest tick possible. You should be able to find the narrow it down that way. Remember that over tightening the rocker arms can cause the valve to slap the piston. Hence the bent pushrod. Two things could have come from this: 1 you broke a lifter (you didn't say mechanical or hydralic) or 2 you have damage on your connecting rod or piston. I would lean towards the lifter like you suggested.

Here's something else to think about as well... Sometimes an engine will come fresh from a rebuild with a tick. Someone may have lost track of what rod they were resizing, didn't use the correct rod bearing, or over ground the crank. These are just things to keep in the back of your mind not the rule.

They are hydraulic lifters. I don't think it is a rod or piston, I'm just hoping the valve isn't bent.

What about a cam lobe? Could it have suffered from this?

I figured it out. The rocker arms on the #5 cylinder keep coming loose. Sure am glad nothing major was damaged. I guess I can put some locknuts on the rockers to keep them tight. What do you guys think?
