Power steering help

Went salvage shopping today for a couple of upgrades. One of the items on list was power steering pump. Already completed the upgrade on another 65 which has the narrow filler and dip stick tube. All of the pumps i looked at today were of the large tube type. Almost certain the other pump came off mid 70's Ford truck. Anyone know what year(s) i should look for. Can i referred to the tag on the pump as a reference. Perhaps can locate shop that sells rebuilt pumps.

Dave, I think the large tube pumps interchange with the small tube cannister type.

I stripped a '76 F-150 with the cannister type, and then stripped a '78 F-150 with the plastic large hole type. Both had the exact same power steering gear, so I believe the issue was simply externals. The pump bolt holes all matched the brackets, too.

I installed the '78 pump on another '76 F-150, using a new '78 PS hose, and it all worked fine. So I would guess that any pump from '68 up to '79 would work.

This is a new topic that John has some experence with, and I have not. I would like to see more impute on the subject. It certainly would be easier to fill the larger opening pumps. One concern that I have is the mounting brackets. The FE was discontinued in 76 but is still my favorite truck engine.

Hope to see more discussion.

Appears tags do have some significance if able to read them. Reviewed an Interchange Manual and will add disclaimer that am not sure if know how to make any sense out of the reference numbers. From what i can gather, p/s gear boxes are interchangeable for the 4X2 F100 series from 69 thru 79. Not sure, appears Saginaw gear box may have restrictions. Seems there are limitations with regards to the pumps. The 73 thru 77 used same pump one could obtain from 75-77 Bronco; 77 Cougar(tag # HBA-EK); 73, 76-77 conv. cab Ford truck; 77 LTD ll (tag # HBA-EK); 72 Thunderbird w/o A/C from 7/1/72; and 77 Thunderbird (tag# HBA-EK). Appears there are 2 reference #'s in 74-75(tag #'s HBA-CR & HBA-DF). There is a notation regarding the 69 302 ci w/ respect to aux. elect. power paks. As i have found in these upgrades, there are number of different combinations not covered in manual. Anyhow, if anyone can make any sense out of it, all the better.

Dave, I do know that the seal kits mention cars and some of the other models that they can be used with.

The year would have to go back to 65 that the Saginaw gear will fit. The same three mount holes remained from 65 to 79. In 1980 the gear was moved to the front of the axle. The top of that gear is the same as the one prior but the worm has left hand thread.

There is a difference in the inside pump part of the gear between early & later year models.

Very interesting
