I am not driving my 95f150 right now cause i bought an 02 mustang gt and cant afford insurance on both. After driving the stang for a few months i realize how much i miss my truck.
My truck is way to dangerous to ride on the road right now cause i can literally grab my front passenger tire and shake it quite a bit. Im thinking my ball joints are bad. Need new wheel bearings, warn hubs dont even turn anymore unless its with pliers, and i want 4.56 in front and rear cause my truck is gutless with 35's on it. And i cant seem to get the alignment right on my truck. Once its aligned its out again a week later.
Would you guys Do a SAS or pay the $ for all new wheel bearings, Balljoints, etc. I just cant seem to find a solid axle, which trucks and years could i get one from? Thanks
i believe that you can use a 78-79 d44 out of an f150/bronco or go all out and swap in a d60 try doing a search on here for "sas" or "solid axle swap" and you'll find tons and tons of info. any other questions feel free to ask
I agree - unless you really plan on wheeling your truck hard, you don't really need the solid axle anyway. Save it for someone who needs it.
Front end work on these trucks is cake. Wheel bearings and ball joints are cheap and easy.
Oh i wheel her hard allright. Shes got a twisted frame again, Bent and cracked drop down brackets, all 4 ball joints bad after having them on for only 3 months and the same for the tie rods. Brand new shocks up front 2 went bad a few weeks later (trailmaster) wheel bearings, axle seals, gone in no time.
Changed shift forks on the crappy mr52 tranny, still grinds, motor mounts are bad, rims got bent, windshield smashed out, back window fell out front seats hitting it (roped in type),passenger side mirror missing from hitting a tree, clutch ready for replacement, steering box leaks, need new bushings all around. Drive shaft u joints have play in them, tail shaft out of bw1356 leaks bad and already replaced the seal??? I HATE THE TTB!!!
I had the same problem with my 91' f150,My driver-side wheel had lots of play,My warn hub(driver-side only)woldn't lock/unlock unless forced. I took of the wheel to discover my roter was hanging on by the caliper,Your ball joints my be used, but i'm willing to say it is your inner wheel-bearings(like mine)and they don't cost much.I hade this problem due to mud and water,ALWAYS WASH YOUR TRUCK WHEN DONE PLAYING IN MUD!!!!!!!!!
since you have 35" tires and are beyond the capabilities of the LD D44 TTB in my opinion, I would do the swap. I have the same plans and have been gathering parts and knowledge to do it to mine soon. Good luck in your choice!
If you are planning to go to a SAS, my suggestion would be to just get a new truck that already has a non-TTB front end. 70's F150's and Broncos had the D44, 70's F250's had the D44HD or D60, with open knuckles after 77 I believe. Good luck finding a pre-80 F350 4x4 with a D60, I think that they only made SRW versions in 79. Or, get a F350 from 86 up, D60 front. By the time that you sink the money into the new axle, you can probably pick up a truck that has the same setup for less. Besides, it sounds like your truck needs more than a front axle.
I went down the same path that you are about to with my 86 F150, I even bought a D44HD front from a 77 F250 to do the SAS, Fortunately for me, I came across a good deal on a 90 F350 with the D60 front and abandoned the 86.
