While driving a couple of days ago my '93 Bronco with a 5.8 stopped running suddenly. It would crank over ok but didn't have any spark coming out of the coil. I pulled it home and when I got there, it started right up only to leave me stranded by dying out while driving home from the bar at 2AM. I replaced the cap and rotor yesterday along with the ignition control module and it ran fine last night and all day today. I had the module tested at two different Oreilly stores and one says its good the other says bad. I parked it about an hour ago and now it is doing it again. It started up for about thirty seconds before quitting again. Any suggestions? Thanks.
If its not the coil, TFI module, cap or rotor, I'd start looking for a broken ground or loose connectors. Take them all off one at a time and reinsert them to scrape off any dirt on the contacts.
Also, check your engine ground strap on the passenger side. If its rusty, brittle, missing, you'll have ignition problems for sure.
I started with the ground and it all seems to be in order. I am still trying to finish up disconnecting and reconnecting but I still can't find any problems. I might try the pip sensor, is there any way to test it?
It turned out to be the pick up coil or PIP sensor that is inside the distributor. The piece itself cost me 32.00 and would require me to completely tear down the distributor to replace. The new distributor with the new pick up coil already installed costed me 44.95 so I returned the Pick up and just replaced the distributor. The only thing now is that it has a loss of power. It doesn't back fire or miss but it sure feels like I am pulling a trailer or driving with the brake on. Maybe timing is off or I put the distributor in a tooth off? I am pretty sure I put it back in the same way I pulled it out, according to the marks I painted on the base of the dizzy and the rotor with the plastic housing. Thanks for all the suggestions.
Timing is probably off now, The marks from one distributor to another are often different, this is just a guide from the factory. I time my vehicles by ear, but some people use a light. Try advanceing the timing(rotating clockwise) until it pings on accel, then back of slightly until you hear little or no ping. Back in the old days, put your foot on the brake, put it in gear and give it half throttle and have a guy turn the distributor to find the sweet spot.
It turned out to be a little off time. I didn't realize how much differance a half inch turn can make. It is running fine now and got all it's power back. Thanks for the help.
