My friend has a 2004 expy xlt. I have a 2000 eddie bauer. I parked next to him the other day and noticed that my vehicle sat much higher then his.
He does have 17's on his rims also, Did they lower the chasis on the new ones or is the body just that much smaller?
The new ones have a wider 'body', but they sit a lot lower. I'm sure this was done to reduce roll-over probabilities and improve ingress/egress for the Expy's target market.
I'll bet Ford did it for legal reasons. Stock bumper height on trucks/suvs are too high and are causing more deaths when normal cars are involved. I talked to a lawyer who was getting new tires the other day. I was explaining how I planned to lift my F150 before getting rims and tires. He said that he recently completed a lawsuit where he represented folks injured in a 2 car crash. Seems they missed a stop sign and were hit by a guy driving a lifted truck. Even though it was their fault they ended up winning some big cash because the truck's bumper was higer than theirs and posed an unacceptable risk. He says it's only the start...
The move to Rear Independent Suspension yields a much lower ground clearance and subsequently a lower overall height. Also allows the rear seats to fold in place as opposed to having them removeable. The move may be in part to rollover considerations but mainly is for the average consumer that wants a "car like" ride. As for me - give me a solid axle any day.

And that's about it. Old Expy's a truck. New one's a car. Gotta laugh at people who complain a truck is too "trucklike". AHAHAHAA!!
If I'm not mistaken the new rear independent suspension goes through the frame as the the old ones w/ the straight axles or whatever sit under the fame. Thus making the BODY sit higher.
According to the brochures, the height of the '03+ 4X4s is lower than the '03+ 4X2s (not much, 2 tenths of an inch) but it's still odd. And because of the independent suspension, the '03+ 4X4s don't have to sit as high as the pre '03 4X4s. My '03 4X2 sits higher than my friends '98 4X2, but on the contrary, a pre '03 4X4 will sit much higher than a '03+ 4X4, that's evident just from looking at them.
