The speedometer in my 74 F100 has developed a clicking noise (thought it was a valve, at first). I am assuming that the gear has dropped a tooth or something like it. Can the gear be replaced?
It is also about 10mph out of calibration - it was doing this before the clicking started.
So, can I replace the speedometer gear and calibrate the speedometer? I hate to touch the thing as it only has 86K original miles.
The gear is in the tail shaft of the trans. It can be replaced, most any trans shop or dealership would have one. They are identified by color and tooth count. That is also how you calibrate it, by changing the gear size. Tell them what you have and how far off your speedo is, and they will find the correct gear. Do you have the correct size tires, this will change the speedo too...? 235/75/15
Do you hear the clicking in the dash? If so, remove the guage cluster and drive to see if the clicking stops. If so, it's in the speedo. If the clicking is still there, it must be the cable.
Thanks. I probably need to get that gear replaced before I get a ticket. The faster I go the further off it gets. When I'm doing 50 I'm really doing closer to 70.
The clicking is in the dash. At slower speeds I can see the speedometer needle jump at the sound of the click. If it is in the speedometer is there a fix for that or does it mean new speedo?
