dash and reverse lights

I have a 76 f-150 ranger. The reverse lights and the gauge lights donn't work all the gauges work. I've allready switch over all the fuses even replaced the reverse bulbs. Anything else I should try. I work the late shift so its dark going home and I am not to crazy about speeding tickets thanks

there are bulbs inside(behind) the panel that could be out, but it would be odd if they are all out, this may sound dumb but have you tried turning the head light switch, the lights should get brighter as you turn the switch to the left (counter-clockwise) and all the way to the left should turn on your dome light, sorry if you've already tried that

Do the lights work on the heater control and over the wiper switch? If so, then you have a problem in the guage cluster, most likely a poor connection or burned bulbs.

Is this a auto or manual trans? Auto trans has the switch at the base of the column - reverse lights are run by the neutral safety switch... 3spd manual trans has switch in linkages at base of column on engine side of firewall. 4spd manual trans has screw-in switch in the top of the trans. Find your switch and test for power to the switch and on other side when in reverse. Let us know what you find.

The fact that the other dash lights work, tells you the light switch and wiring in the dash is working. So the problem is in the guage cluster.

Checking the guage cluster is pretty easy. Just need to remove the plastic trim around the guage cluster, then remove the cluster. On the back, there are two twist in bulb holders that light up the dash lights, check that these bulbs are good. Also check that the contacts on the printed circuit are clean and tight. Clean the contacts and install new bulbs, then check to see if it works.

Let us know how it goes...
