My 86 f250 4X's master cylinder keeps leaking out the back of the cap top lid. The level of the front resorvior seems to be dropping too. This keeps causing my brake light to flash. I've put in 3 master cylinders thinking I've had bad ones, (Thank goodness for a helpful parts store) but I think maybe there must be some other problem. The rest of the system, lines and all are tight and not leaking. Seems to have lost some of it's braking power too as I can't lock up the brakes even if I mash the pedal. Any help or advice would sure help relieve my frustration! Thanks..
That's rather unusual after replacing the master cylinder three times. I'm lost as to what you can do to fix this problem. Have you also been replacing the top cap when you replace the master cylinder? The rubber gasket on the underside of the cap could be torn or cracked and therefore causing the master cylinder to leak.

LAST EDITED ON 09-Apr-01 AT 04:44 PM (EST)[p] I had the same problem with my brakes on my '82 F-250 4x4 with sad brake performance. This truck had best anti-lock brakes I've ever seen, the problem was it wouldn't lock-up the tires no matter how hard I stood on the pedal. I replaced alot of the brakes components at once because I was sick and tired of piece-mealing it. I repaced both front dual piston calipers, new pads, new brake booster w/ new master cylinder, new front brake hoses. Since the rear brakes were completely gone thru about 6 months prior I left them alone except for adjustment. WHAT A FRICKEN DIFFERENCE, man this ***** stops & like right now. The main problem that I saw once I started to replace components was that the front calipers weren't fully releasing and glazing the pads and rotors, also the master cylinder seemed to be internally by-passing causing only partial brake fluid pressure to reach the calipers and wheel cylinders. In your case also look into cleaning out the proportioning valve, dirty fluid can cause erratic and/or ill performing brakes.
I hope this helps in any way.
Thanks guys, found the problem though I don't know why it caused the fluid to leak out the top of the cover. It's new and so is the gasket too. Anyway, I took the rear brakes apart and found a wheel cylinder leaking in the drum. That's why she wouldn't stop too well. Once repalced and cleaned up she stops like right now! Well see if the top cover stops leaking now. Nice to know I can stop when I need to now.
