I have an 1980 Bronco and I need to repalce the shocks. The shocks on the machine arre not original, but it looks as if they have been on there a LONG time; they are rusted and several are oozing oil.
I really don't want to pay the local wrench jockeys $15-$20 per shock to install the new shocks. I want to do it myself if the grief factor isn't too bad.
My concern is the front quad shocks. While I am not worried about cracking loose the bottom nuts, what about the top? Doesn't look as though there is a lot of room to get good leverage and I don't own a cutting torch to cut them off. Any suggestions for making the job any easier?
I assume I could douse the nuts and threas with penetrating oil for a week or so before I attempt the job?
that's your best bet tombob, douse everything with a good penetrating spray a couple times, the stuff really works great, I've used Marvel super spray and PB blaster and they both work great, I did my truck shocks awhile back w/ quad's on front and they came off pretty easy...
Mine were like yours. I either twisted until the top bolt broke or you can just cut the shock on the underside of the tower. (Don't cut into the hydraulic part, cut through the bushing and you will be cutting throught the bolt at the same time.) Hope that made sense.

What's the correct way to support the vehicle when changing shocks ??
Should the shocks be extended or compressed for easiest installation ??
I had to compress mine and then ziptie them so they wouldnt reopen. I still have the bruises on my chest 3 wks later. Just cut the ziptie when you have them inplace.

I used a jack stand.

I'm with iagainsti... the shocks came with nylon ties compressing them. I bolted in the bottoms, aligned the tops and cut the straps. With one or two I misaligned them and had to compress them and man handle them into place.
