The both have leaf springs in a 250.

The 44 has about a 3" diameter lockout hub on it.
The 50 is much larger.

I need to measure mine again as I can not remember if it is 2.75" or 3.25" right now.

Another thing that may clue you in is the cab.
Regular cabs tend to have a 44.
Extended and crew cabs tend to have the 50.

My 86 regular cab diesel has a 44.
My friends 87 extended cab has a 50 under a 351 gas motor.

I believe that the carrier break for the D44 is 3.73:1 gears.

Yes, whenever you pass the carrier break you must also upgrade to the next carrier.
I'll have to do the same thing to my '77 when I do a gear change. The rear end should be fine. I know that the 9" rear's carrier break is 4.56(meaning you can go to a 4.56's, but no lower), but I'm not sure about your truck. Though I would assume that 4.56's would be fine.
