noisy rear end
Hello everyone. Just heard about this website and was told someone might have an answer to my problem. I have a 1999 F-150 4x4, 4.6ltr, approx 75K miles. Don't know much more about it except that the 4.6 is a dog(wish it was the 5.4) and that the rear end has started growling and or whining. It started about a week ago and has been getting progressively worse. I checked fluid level and, tho a little low, I was able to touch oil one knuckle deep. Is this a common problem with 99 F-150's? Any ideas what it is? I was told there may be a clutch of some kind in the rear end that may be defective. Was also told it could be wheel bearings.(?) Can anyone identify the problem and how to fix it??? Thanks

Is the sound there when accelerating/cruising and slowing? If so, it is probably a bad bearing. If it is only there during one of the above, it could be a worn ring or pinion gear.
